Hi, considering going to NYC October 6-11 possibly 1 or 2 extra days depending on prices.
Can someone help with a few quick querys?
1. Good cheap, safe accommodation?
At the moment, it will be 1 single travller but there is possibility I could share with relations - which would mean a 1 br aptmt may do.
2. The cheapest/most convenient way to get to NYC from JFK?
3. Travel options (day passes / week passes) - what do they cover %26amp; how much
4. Supposing I had friday %26amp; Saturday in its entirety, what should I go see. Im interested in Libery Island %26amp; Ellis island %26amp; The Empire State Building - so where would these fit in in a 2 day itinerary?
Also what extras could I get for Thursday (Broadway show maybe)
5. If possible I%26#39;d go to some game, I know theres no Basketball fixtures but what about NFL or MLB/NHL??
6. How long does it take to get to Atlantic city?
How much /best way to travel
Thanks
(Ok so maybe it s not that quick a query - but any help appreciated )

1) Explore this site or other postings. I don%26#39;t know much about hotels in NY.
2) The cheapest way is to take the AirTrain (I think it%26#39;s like $5) to the E train which is then $2 to Manhattan.
3) You can get daily, weekly and longer unlimited metro cards. I%26#39;m not sure how much they cost but it%26#39;s probably cost-effective if you plan to take 3 or more subway rides per day.
4) You could easily do all 3 of the things you mentioned in 1 day. The Empire State Building stays open in the evening so you can always go there later.
5) The regular season of baseball ends before you get here, but the playoffs will be ongoing. Assuming the Yanks and/or Mets get the wild card and make it to the playoffs you might be able to see a game still. It%26#39;ll cost you a lot and be hard to get tickets though. You can check online to see if the Giants or Jets are playing a home game (football) on the Sunday that you%26#39;re here but they actually play in New Jersey. You can get right to the stadium via a cheap bus out of Port Authority.
6) It takes a few hours to get to Atlantic City. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend going there. It%26#39;s a pain getting there and isn%26#39;t very impressive in my opinion.

cp, if you%26#39;re going to visit Atlantic City to gamble, then it%26#39;s well worth a one day trip. I made the trip with a few relations and we had great fun. Definitely not comparable to Vegas ; but enjoyable in its own way for gamblers. The buses for Atlantic City leave from near Battery Park at the tip of Manhattan. The fares are very cheap because the Atlantic City philosophy is to encourage visitors and you are often refunded part of the bus fare for gambling purposes. I can%26#39;t remember how long the journey took ; but its definitely doable on a return basis in the space of a day.
1. I think you may find it very difficult to find much available for those dates. The city is just jammed. I%26#39;ve looked on a few websites for you and haven%26#39;t found much. It easier to tell you what NOT to book: the Pennsylvania, the Ramada New Yorker, the Carter and the Milford Plaza are NOT great.
The Herald Square might work as cheap and cheerful for 1. Other possibilities of lesser known small, inexpensive but decent places are the Broadway Inn, the Ameritania is supposed to be ok based on reviews here.
The usual recos like the Belvedere will be booked.
You might try some apartment agencies. There the only one NOT to use is woogoo or yourstay. Some decent ones are

2. Where you%26#39;re staying will affect which is the best way to travel form the airport. The AirTrain/subway is cheapest but not nec. the most conveninet depending on where you%26#39;re staying.
There are also buses that go to either Port Authority bus terminal on the west side or Grand Central Station on the east side for $15/person.
3. There%26#39;s a 1 week metrocard for $24 with unlimited rides. Normally a ride is $2. You can also get a ';pay as you go'; metrocard with almost any dollar amount on it. $10 gives you 6 rides (1 free).
Here%26#39;s the subway map which will show you the links from the airport. There%26#39;s also a link to info on the metrocards

6. If you are going to AC just to gamble, consider Foxwoods in Connecticut. They have buses that go there all the time. It%26#39;s the world%26#39;s largest casino and quite a sight.
Also, about 15 minutes from Foxwoods is the Mohegan Sun which also has buses to it. Excellent restaurants there.
I think either of them is preferable to AC. I only like the boardwalk in AC, not the casinos.
Hi, thanks for that - Atlantic city would be to gamble yes! More specifiaclly some hold %26#39;em.
Are there nightly tournaments there?
Also how long busd ride to CT?
I%26#39;ve also heard there are free buses from NYC to Atlantic City?
And It may suit, as there is a possibility of heading on to Baltimore after that.
cp, AC has more casinos. Foxwood has more poker tables than any ONE AC casino though. The ride is roughly about the same - 2.5 hours or so. AC is a little closer and has more non gambling related things to do.
Re: the ';free'; busses. There is no such thing as a free bus. What happens is that you pay (roughly) $20 for a bus ticket, and the casino gives you (again, for example) $10 in chips and $10 in food coupons. There are a few bus companies. See greyhound.com/products_services/casino_nj.sh鈥?/a> for one of them. Greyhound (as well as most busses) leaves from the Port Authority which is at 40th St and 8th Avenue.
If the Yankees (or Mets I suppose) make the playoffs, then there might still be games left to play. The regular season ends on October 2. As much as I would like to think that the Yankees will be there, it%26#39;s up in the air right now. The NBA will not be in regular season yet. The NFL will be playing (season just started yesterday). http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/scoreboard?w=5 Looks like your best option will be with the Jets. Tickets are not that easy to come by. Check ebay or stubhub.com or a similar site.
You metnioned your on a budget and want to see a Broadway - So just remember no to pay full price. You can get discounted tickets at the TKTS booth or at sites like www.broadwaybox.com
