New York Wedding Ceremony/Reception

I%26#39;ve recently got engaged and my fiance and I are looking at the idea of getting married in new york spring 2007. Our idea is to get married in central park (hopefully late afternoon) then onto a reception/meal.

Ideally we%26#39;d like somewhere where we could go for drinks after the ceremony. have a meal %26amp; bit of a party with our guests( 16-20). Does anyone know a suitable venue ?

Is it better to arrange everything independently, or through a company. I%26#39;ve heard of White Sand Weddings, has anyone used them?

You%26#39;ll get tons of respsonses for both places in Central Park to have the ceremony and venues for your reception so I just want to put my 2p worth in here and say - arrange it yourself!

You get to have exactly what you want, you%26#39;ll pay what the restaurant/photographer/officiant actually charges rather than mark up that companies such as White Sands add on.

Its a lot more simple than you think it might be too, I recently did it myself (almost solely with help from this forum).

Its a hot topic at the moment - if you haven%26#39;t already done so put the words %26#39;wedding%26#39; or %26#39;married%26#39; in the box in the top right of this page (just to the right of Search in: New York City, New York forums) and you%26#39;ll get tons of posts from people who have either done it or are currently arranging it.

Its brilliant fun D-I-Ying it!

Apparently these companies charge a lot of money and if you %26#39;re prepared to spend some time and energy doing research etc. on your own, you can save a lot and get maybe a better result.

The Central Park website is centralparkny.com There%26#39;s a section there on weddings. It says you need a permit that costs money and I%26#39;m not sure whether that%26#39;s true for your size wedding. You should check.

Here%26#39;s a website I found when Ange was looking for a photographer that has lists of everything

One tip I gave another woman here looking for the same thing, as you search, look for places with rooms for rehearsal dinners. Rehearsal dinners here are often the size you%26#39;re talking about for your wedding and restaurants/caterers often have prices already worked out for that sort of party (which will be a lot cheaper than the normal wedding). %26#39;;)

What sort of budget do you have for the party venue? What sort of ambiance do you want? (ie casual, formal?) What sort of food? Also, day of the week will make a difference. Weekends will cost more.

One thought right off the bat is Trattoria Dell %26#39;Arte, a nice Italian restaurant not far from the south end of the park. They have several private rooms.

Same company also owns the Redeye Grill next door for seafood.

Forgot to also give you the website for NY Magazine%26#39;s wedding guide

The first place to look is Ange%26#39;s and 22Seconds%26#39; wedding report and photo site. Their wedding was wonderful!

Next, go to Central Park%26#39;s site, www.centralparknyc.org, where you%26#39;ll find an entire section on weddings. You%26#39;ll have to obtain a permit to use the park. There are gorgeous sites for the ceremony. My favorite is also the most popular, the Conservatory Garden.

There are two restaurants in the park. Tavern on the Green is very beautiful. Although they don%26#39;t get high marks for food, it%26#39;s still enormously popular. The other is the Boathouse Restaurant. It sits on the Lake, and the food -- while not haute cuisine -- is good. But their private room seats a minimum of around 60 people, so you could arrange for a couple of big tables for your party, but it wouldn%26#39;t be private. The other thing about dining there is that the Lake isn%26#39;t lit at night. Without the view, the restaurant is ordinary.

I think you should consider hiring a mini bus to take everyone from the wedding to the dinner, which could then be anywhere. You%26#39;ll get lots of suggestions here. NY Whiz is the source of all knowledge! Off the top of my head, I%26#39;d heartily recommend the River Cafe, where Ange and 22Seconds went. The food%26#39;s good, the setting is glorious, and they go out of their way to make everything special for you.

The message boards/forums on these wedding websites saved our event! If you post an inquiry about Central Park, many overly-organized, crazed newlyweds and brides-to-be will reply with invaluable information!!

I%26#39;m NOT source of all knowledge. I got the Central Park website wrong!!! :)

AJW is currently planning a wedding for about the same number of people. She chose Bayards which is a lovely place downtown but she%26#39;s having the ceremony there as well. Here are 2 previous threads of hers with lots of good info

I think it is a fantastic idea for you to marry in Central Park, but then I would as I did the same thing Oct 5th 2004.

If you need any info ask away or click on my name and search my posts to find previous posts on the subject I%26#39;ve made.

Best of luck and I look forward reading how your plans develop.

Bit of a world exclusive here but since Bettina mentioned looking at our wedding report.......

White Sands are a good idea IMO if you%26#39;re anything like me and my H2B and are not v.good at organising! They have done everything for us and we are v.happy. One month today and I will be Mrs Dale!

Our wedding package was 拢700, but at the end of the day it%26#39;s not what%26#39;s spent but what is said :o)
