FAO Dltreks and Geohab: Long Island Options

Can you please help.

We have been to NY city quite a few times and have done a bit of travelling around the state too. We are looking to come back next summer and would like to take a week out relaxing perhaps in a coastal town out Long Island. Can you suggest where would be suitable.

I have looked at a lot of places but they don%26#39;t all seem to have hotels. We would be happy renting a house if that was an available option but I really don%26#39;t know where to start. we have two teenage sons and like a good standard of accommodation.

We have only been out LI to go fishing but never stayed around long enough to explore further than the pier.

Thanks in advance

I highly recommend checking out Montauk, Long Island - it is the tippy-tip-tip of the southern fork of the island. It is about a 3 hour drive or RR ride from NYC - in basically a straight line. It is out past the hoity-toity Hamptons. It is not as developed, a little less expensive, great fishing, great seafood!! Whale watching, charter boats, etc. Nice ferry rides to Shelter Island, and from Shelter Island to Sag Harbor, Greenport, etc, etc, etc.

Lots of little seaside motels with goofy names like, ';The Albatross';. If you want something fancier, check out the Montauk Manor.

Thanks Queensboulevard,

That is just the kind of info I wanted. We have relatives in Queens and like to do something as well as visit with relatives so we have been up to Niagara Falls and Toronto, West Point, finger lakes, Catskills, etc. Quite fancied a trip to Lake Placid but we thought it might be a bit cold as well as quite a drive up there.

Thanks again.

Your welcome! HTH (happy to help)

BTW, Montauk Beach and the crazy characters at Star Island Yacht Club were the inspiration for the original Jaws movie.

Definitely eat at Gossman%26#39;s and Shagwong.

Do NOT eat at Salivar%26#39;s unless you have a couple of teeth missing, have a wooden leg, have had more bodily contact with giant marlin than women, and know at least 28 kinds of rope knots. ARrrrrr, matey! It%26#39;s the kind of place where everything tastes like grease - even a glass of milk, if they served that sort of thing. (Thankfuly, I was politely ignored when I accidentally ventured in there.)

Who%26#39;s Wong and does he/she have a say in the matter?

I think the american hotel in sag harbor wont be so bad... its a charming town thats considered ';part of'; the hamptons and you have tons of activites: beaches (like hamptons, fire island or robert moses), hamptons nightlife, north fork wine tours, great restaurants (the one in the hotel is quite exceptional), the montauk lighthouse, the shopping- modest to highend in east hampton... im quite sure it would be a laid back, taking it easy vacation but not to boring and seculded for your sons... but of course it will be in summer, becuase the hamptons is pretty much dead off season... and during a weekday... maybe another day trip trip to nyc for sights and dinner wont be so bad... jsut take the LIRR (long island rail road)

good luck!!

another great hotel is the Baker House 1650 in East Hampton... its a bit more ';in the scene'; area and a bit more luxurious... and the accomodations are larger and more family friendly.

Thanks guys for all your advice.
