International Shoppers Savings Card

What is this, where do you get it and what are the savings and where can you use it? Thanks

International Shoppers Savings Card

Martin, it%26#39;s a Macy%26#39;s card which entitles you to 11% discount of a lot (not all) of their wares. You get it from their Customer Services dept which is on the mezzanine floor (don%26#39;t forget to take your passport with you).

Other department stores (Bloomingdales) have similar schemes.

International Shoppers Savings Card

Thanks Nic. Is Macys very like Bloomingdales - is one better than the other?

Macy%26#39;s is the largest department store in the world. That said; Bloomingdales%26#39; merchandise is neater (literally) ans the sales staff are a bit more knowledgeable and courteous. Bloomingdale%26#39;s is a bit more upscale. Interestingly, they are both owned by the same company.

Both Macy%26#39;s and Bloomingdale%26#39;s are fun to visit. Both have good sales. But don%26#39;t bet your rent money on the savings card. There are many exclusions. If the card you are talking about costs money, skip it.

Can the card be used on cosmetics ,skincare ?

It doesn%26#39;t cost money but it does, as I hinted before, have exclusions. It doesn%26#39;t include (and I quote from the actual card) ';cosmetics, fragrances, leased departments, services, gift certificates, gift cards, prior purchases, furniture, mattresses.';

Nic,

What%26#39;s left then? Clothes, handbags and shoes?

It hardley sounds worth the effort or is there a point? By the way can%26#39;t you claim any tax you pay back whilst in the States when you depart at the airport? How easy is this?

I suppose it depends what you%26#39;re looking for but I would have thought clothes was what most people want to buy plus gifts or things for the home. Can%26#39;t imagine that too many people will be disappointed that mattresses are excluded! There is no catch but if people want to pay an extra 11%, who am I to stop them?

Whilst you can reclaim GST (Goods and Services Tax) for items bought in Canada, the same does not apply to the USA.

    Thanks

    Sam

Driving from Princeton, NJ to Niagarafalls - Which route?

scenic stops? definately take the 90 through nys. theres tons of things to do along the way. the mohawk valley between albany and utica gives the best views to I-90 drivers. after that its all flat. i highly recommend stopping at letchworth state park between buffalo and rochester. this place is amazing, i dont know how else to describe it. the genesee river gorge, 600 feet cliffs, many hiking trails. ';grand canyon of the east.'; this is the northeast at its best. my favorite is walking accross the railroad tressle 450 feet above the trees.

Driving from Princeton, NJ to Niagarafalls - Which route?

...and then from there its less than 1 hour to buffalo and then 20 minutes to niagara

You can also stop off at Seneca lake. Watkins glenn gorge is amazing.

This question is coming up almost daily as the prices of NY hotels rise. If you put stay in New Jersey in the text search above you%26#39;ll find lots of other posts discussing pros and cons and listing hotels. The Hyatt in Jersey City and the Sheraton on the Hudson in Weehawken seem to be the best options if you%26#39;re considering this.

note about the Sheraton and the ferry

according to the NYWaterway website, the ferry that serves the Sheraton in Weehawken operates only on weekdays

    www.nywaterway.com/lincolnharbor_w38.html

if you are at the Sheraton on weekends, you%26#39;ll need to use their shuttle which will take you to the Port Imperial location and the ferry from there runs 7 days a week

    I have compiled the information about the various options here ---%26amp;gt;

    Help with our itinerary

Hi. We will be in New York for 4 days next week for our 5th wedding anniversary. We are staying at the Belvedere Hotel in Midtown and plan to walk everywhere. We figured the best way to see as much as the city as possible would be to pick an area for each day. Day one would be Times Square/Central Park, Day two would be downtown (making our way down through Soho, CHinatown, Nolita, Greenwich and WTC), Day three would be Upper East and Day four would be Upper West. Can someone let us know if this is a realistic itinerary on foot in four days? We have a list of places in each area that we wish to visit (ie. stores, restaurants, sites), but need to know if this is would be a ridiculous feat or the right approach. Thanks so much for your help.

Yes, sounds good. Bus and subway would be the best way to get to those neighborhoods.

    New York Hotels

Most NY hotel rooms are small, but not at Embassy Suites in Financial District. Although it is out of the way, bus and subway are close. You can%26#39;t beat the price included breakfast and happy hour. We don%26#39;t stay anywhere else.

If you stay in midtown Manhattan, you will be more centrally located---not far from many attractions. Plus, if you want to see a Broadway play, it is very convenient. There are some nice hotels in Times Square. However, Times Square is crowded 24/7. I know many people aren%26#39;t bothered by that. Also, several subway lines go through Times Square so you would be able to easily get around the city.

  • Veeery long trip report! Seriously, 11 days!!

Hi everyone!! Just got back from my amazing trip to NYC three days ago, and decided to start writing out my trip report now, before the enormity of actually writing down 11 days worth of info got the most of me! I barely know how to begin! I guess I will just start from the beginning :) But first of all, a special thanks to everyone who answered all my questions, and really made me feel prepared to take on this amazing city. Also, NYCgirl, thank you again so much for SUCH a great introduction to the city, I think that the BAG program is really a wonderful service. Ok, here goes......

    DAY 1 - Saturday 20th.

After two very nice days in Connecticut with my family, Kate (my friend) and I took a 12.00 train from CT to GCS. Very easy, and even though the train was bustling, we got seats, managed to stow our two HUGE suitcases (and this was BEFORE we even started shopping) and had a very enjoyable ride into the city.

Had no problems getting out of GCS, and to our B%26amp;B in Murray Hill. I actually found this place on TA! The agency is CityLights, and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to feel like they are ';living'; in Manhatten rather than visiting at a hotel. Our hostess was just the sweetest person ever, and so accomodating!

After we got there and unpacked, we decided to just wander around, and see what was nearby. We were staying btw. 3rd Av and Lex, so we walked down to 3rd Av and had lunch at Patsy%26#39;s Pizza. Not sure if it was the Patsy%26#39;s that has been recommended by this site, but it was ok, not great. Fun to just sit outside, share a pie, have a beer and people watch for a couple hours.

Went back to B%26amp;B and had a nice chat with our hostess, who actually invited us to join her at the Lincoln Center ';Out-of-Doors'; performance for that evening! We of course were delighted, especially because we had no idea of what to do on a Saturday night by ourselves, and this seemed like a really wonderful thing to do. So off we went, jumped on the crosstown bus on 42. and Lex, and went all the way up to the Lincoln Center (UWS). The performance for that evening was the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and it was just fabulous. The seats totally filled up within an hour, and we think that Maya Angelou was sitting just three rows down from us! That was our only celebrity sighting, sadly enough...But what an amazing sighting, if it was her! :) It was so much fun being there, and doing something like that. Just being at the Lincoln Center, seeing Avery Fisher Hall, etc, it was amazing. We headed home after the performance, easy as pie on the bus. Went to bed after a long, but perfect and laid-back first day in the city, looking forward to our Big Apple Greeter the following day!!!

    DAY 2 - Sunday 21st.

Wow, this day was crazy (in a good way!! :) We met our greeter, NYCgirl, at 11, at our place. This day was SO hot and humid, but we didn%26#39;t let that get the best of us, and headed right over to GCS. Even though we had already been there, we only zipped through the first time, this time we spent some time there, and NYCgirl pointed out things we never would have noticed, like the little black spot on the ceiling that was the original ceiling! Very interesting. Saw the food court too, everything looked so yummy!

Then we jumped on the subway and headed down to Canal St. Kate and I were very excited to be there, and were dying to shop, but refrained from it as we wanted to take full advantage of our BAG while we had her :) We headed towards Soho from there. Loved Soho so much, it was so pretty and cozy and wonderful! We walked all over Soho, and eventually headed towards Greenwich Village. Walked all over the Village too, and took a break by the Arch in the Village. Really lovely area, loved the playground and the fountain in that spot.

From there we just kept wandering all over, we walked along Gay Street, which I found so hilarious, as I recognized it from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. If you ever watch the show, in the opening song, or whatever its called, they film that street sign, so funny. After that we actually ended up in the park where Miranda and Steve get married in S*x and the City! That was so fun, we got a really nice pic there too. We also saw Perry Street, which is where Carrie ';lives.'; There was a line to take pics outside her house, and to be honest, it was fun to see, but I could have taken a pic outside of any of those townhouses and not have known the difference! So, needless to say, we didn%26#39;t wait in line :) We saw so much of these areas that I couldn%26#39;t really tell you exactly where else we walked, but seriously, we covered so much ground!

We then headed towards the Meatpacking district, which was so interesting, because it was just so different to the Village. You can be walking down this really developed, smart looking street, and all of a sudden be in a really gross, desolated street. Very interesting. We also walked to the piers there, which was amazing, and gave us a nice breeze.

By that time, we were all pretty tired, so we jumped on a bus and headed to the East Village. This was also a really cool area, and it made me wish I was a student in NYC. There were so many people our age just chilling at sidewalk cafe%26#39;s and great little kooky shops. By the time we had exhausted that area, I was pooped, so we headed towards a subway, and pizza place to have slice and cool down.

After that, we jumped on the Uptown subway, and went to 5th Av. This turned out to be one of our most visited Avenues of the trip ;) SOOO much fun walking down 5th Av, we took our time, looked at all the amazing displays in the windows, etc. We of course had to go into St. Patricks, what a beautiful cathedral, really. I mean, I have been to many other cathedrals around the world, the Duomo in Milan to mention one, but what really got me about this one was the location. To see something like that surrounded by skyscrapers and hundreds of shops and people was almost surreal. Very cool.

We continued up 5th Av to Rockefeller Center. I have been there at X-mas, but never in the summer, and it was soo pretty! We went into the building to look around, and use a restroom, and then bought ourselves a coffee from Starbucks and sat in the shade peoplewatching and chatting about everything. By this time it was 6pm, and the end of our day with NYCgirl. As exhausting as it was, it was just such a great experience, and a truly wonderful introduction to the city! We really felt that got to know our way around, and understood the grid system, etc. And NYCgirl, it was so much fun to get to know you! But I%26#39;m still annoyed you wouldn%26#39;t even let us buy you a coffee!!! :)

After NYCgirl left us, Kate and I got a second wind, perhaps from being in such close proximity to all those amazing shops along 5th Av!! We walked back up 5th Av to the Louis Vitton store, where I made my most extravagant purchase of my life :) That was so cool, I gotta admit. Its crazy how easy it was though...I mean, you just hand the salesman your Visa, and boom, money spent, bag in hand, out the door...But I looooove my bag, used it every single day after that!

Then we headed to UWS to see my godmother (GM) for dinner. We walked through the park from 5th Av by the Plaza, and exited over by the Time Warner Building. Sat in the park for a few minutes to catch our breath and relax, by that time the sun was setting, and it was sooo beautiful in the park. We walked over that bridge that you always see in movies, and saw the carousel, and just took it all in...

We got to my GMs place about 7pm, right near the Dakota building. Wonderful apartment, but the best part was the view from the roof, it was amazing! We took a couple of good shots, and hung out there for maybe 20mins looking at all the buildings and having her point everything out for us...Really great to see. Then we went for a lovely dinner, and headed home about 10. This was just an amazing day, we really enjoyed every minute of it...

Don%26#39;t know if I should keep going now, as this is getting to be quite long, and I%26#39;ve only written about two days!! Ok, I will do Day 3, and then wrap up this part. Hope people are actually still reading this and didn%26#39;t give up 10 paragraphs ago!

    DAY 3 - Monday 22nd

Today we did our first ';real'; shopping day. Can%26#39;t remember every minute of the day, but we headed over to the big Bloomingdales on...I can%26#39;t remember, 69th and something...Spent a couple hours there, trying stuff on, and had great fun in the sunglasses department! The guy helping us was really patient and helpful, even though we probably tried on every pair of Gucci and Dior sunglasses in the display! Eventually found a pair I loved, which I wore every day after :)

By that time we were tired and getting whiny (we are both 5 years old at heart) and went to a cute little restaurant across the street and two blocks up, where we sat outside and had a glass of wine and lunch. Chilled out there for awhile, me admiring myself in my new sunglasses in my handmirror, and Kate discretely reading her guidebook. After lunch, we had to find Kate a great pair of sunglasses, so went to the Sunglasses Hut on the corner, where she also found an amazing pair of glasses! So we both achieved our goals for that day :) Then we just popped into a couple of the other stores along that street, but didn%26#39;t buy anything, just walked around and felt cool in our new glasses ;)

Headed home for some rest before dinner with my cousin and his boyfriend at 7.30. We went to this great place called Josie%26#39;s, on 3rd Av, and I want to say 38th street. Great food, great drinks, great service, and most importantly, great conversation. This was the first time I had ever hung out with my cousin, who is actually my mothers first cousin, and my second cousin. So he and his BF are like 20 years older than us, but we just had SO much fun together! We closed the place down :) Really just got on brilliantly, and ended up spending almost every other night of the rest of the vacation together. The other nights we spent with my god mother :) So, ended a great day with a fantastic evening, and went to bed happy, and looking forward to a great next day, of shopping at Canal St. and Soho!!!

Alrighty folks, I will finish off for today, since this is just crazy how much I have written! Please please please let me know if I am including too many details, I just looooved reading other people%26#39;s trip reports, and especially the ones that were crazy long! :) I will post more tomorrow...Wow, I am gonna be posting for the next week if I keep writing this much about every 3 days....:)

Veeery long trip report! Seriously, 11 days!!

Tina...I%26#39;m waiting for the next instalment. No, there isn%26#39;t too much detail, you%26#39;ve made it a great read. You certainly got around a lot, and although you have said you were shattered, had some lovely relaxing moments from what I can gather.

Will you be posting some photographs? I%26#39;d love to see the one%26#39;s from your GM%26#39;s roof.

    Keep the reports coming please....

Loving it so far - you can never give enough detail!

    Please keep it coming!

Got to agree with Daisiegee and Ange - this is a great read! I do tend to get a bit bored when I read some people%26#39;s trip reports (some people can get a bit self-indulgent) but your%26#39;s is just perfect. Actually, it reminded me a bit of Ange%26#39;s (probably all that enthusiasm which oozes out of every sentence!).

Tina, your location is listed as Norway but you surely can%26#39;t be Norwegian - your English is too good?

Looking forward to the next installment (and the photos).

I figured you would get a second wind, especially after seeing those shops on 5th Avenue. Thanks for contributing to the NYC economy!

Your enthusiam, in person, is contagious, and it does come through in your writing. It was fun meeting you both, too. More, please

Awww. thanks guys! Glad that at least you all enjoyed it! I have to say that I am having alot of fun writing it all down, even rereading it! Kate and I sat down on our last day and made a brief overview of what we did every day, since we were there for so long we couldn%26#39;t remember everything. This brings it all back...:) Nic, I am actually half Norwegian/half American. My first language is English, having lived in London and USA until I was 8, and then moved to Norway where I learned Norwegian. Also, almost only read English books, I hate Norwegian translations :) Second installment will most likely be written tonight!!! :)

i agree, great report so far!!

Tina, your report is very well written and a pleasure to read. Looking forward to the remainder. For visitors reading the report, Bloomingdales is on 59 Street between Lexington and Third Avenues.

Great report Tina. Where did you go to dinner with your GM? ;)

Nice report so far, and no that Patsy%26#39;s was one of the copycats and it doesn%26#39;t have the original coal fired oven that makes Patsy%26#39;s special.

For anyone interested, the only Patsy%26#39;s worth a visit is the one on First Avenue and 116th St. in West Harlem.

Yeah, I was wondering what all the fuss was about Patsy%26#39;s, but now I get it!!! :) We just happened to stumble upon it, and I was like, hey, TA recommends this place! hehe...Whiz, we went for dinner at a great Italian place right across the street from my GMs place, but sadly, I don%26#39;t remember the name...But great food, and a real family run restaurant, the owner%26#39;s little girl brought us our menu%26#39;s! Cute! I would love to write more tonight, but am actually exhausted, so I will try and get down the next three days of the trip tomorrow at some point. Will post photo%26#39;s as soon as I can figure out how! I am trying to use PhotoBucket, but does my personal info show up then?

Coming to NY 1st week in October

Coming to NY 1st week in October

    we are aslo from Sydney

Coming to NY 1st week in October

Fall is a popular time for tourism. It%26#39;s not possible to give a specific time, but you can expect crowds at the major attractions most of the time.

Weather could vary a lot, too. Could be in the 70s or the 40s, sunny or raining. But it%26#39;s usually the nicest time of the year.

Often there are a few hours of super-bright sunshine with a chill in the air! Brisk! On the other hand, it jump to 75F, you never know...Bring a jacket, and maybe gloves and a hat but you may not need them.

wunderground.com is a website that gives historical weather info to give you an idea. While you%26#39;ll still find crowds at popular attractions, kids are back in school so weekdays will not be as crowded as they were over the summer. Great time in NYC. Bring sweaters and jackets for layering in cool evenings.

    NYC design hotels

We are two single girls going for a long weekend to NYC and looking for recommendations as to what hotel to stay in. I%26#39;ve read the reviews here but it%26#39;s really diffcult to decide as the reviews are very mixed. We%26#39;re willing to splurge and would like to stay somewhere ';happening'; and central. Also, in the different reviews people seem to find extremely good deals. I%26#39;ve searched on the net but can%26#39;t seem to find anything close to the deals other have gotten. Any thips is greatly appreciated! Our budget would be up to USD400 per night. Thanks in advance! :)

    NYC design hotels

Hotel prices are skyrocketing and when you come has a lot to do with price. That may be why the prices you%26#39;re seeing are higher.

In NYC, many of the so-called ';design'; hotels are just an excuse for teeny tiny rooms. Then there%26#39;s the issue of ';happening'; vs. central. The most central area, midtown tends to be more business and touristy. The more ';happening'; areas are downtown and less central. So with all those caveats, here are a few places to check.

In midtown, for central location, the W Times Square would be a bit more trendy than your average place and it%26#39;s relatively new. The Royalton is a smaller hotel also near the Times Square area that is a trendy design hotel with a lot of bar action, but not sure how many rooms they have with 2 beds (most have 1 double or queen bed). The Alex is a pricey all suite hotel (rooms are like apartments) on the eastside that has modern decor and a good restaurant and bar.

But the trendiest areas are further downtown. The W Union Square is a good compromise location, just below midtown but a trendy area and good access around town.

Further south, the meatpacking district is a hip (but now noisy) area filled with bars, restaurants and shops. The Gansevoort Hotel here is very young, trendy, rooftop bar etc.

Soho is also a good area and has the Mercer, 60 Thompson and the Soho Grand.

Those would be the best options I think for a splurge. If you%26#39;re looking for more of a budget option, the Cosmopolitan in Tribeca is newish and more affordable. The Rivington on the lower eastside is a good, young area but the hotel sounds like it hasn%26#39;t gotten it%26#39;s act together yet.

  • Hotel by the Brooklyn/Battery Tunnel

I will be visiting NYC next month and have reserved a room at the new Brooklyn Motor Inn. Can anyone tell me what the best way to get into the city will be (maybe the cost of a cab to get to the financial center) and any experiences with this particular hotel...good or bad? Thanks!

    Hotel by the Brooklyn/Battery Tunnel

I%26#39;m not familiar with this hotel, but since it is close to the tunnel it shouldn%26#39;t be more than $10 to the finanical center. You may want to call the hotel directly and talk to the concierge http://www.brooklynmotorinn.com/.

Also, since it is in Red Hook, the subways are a little bit of a walk, but the hotel should be able to give you great directions. Also, Red Hook has some great new nightlife!

    Hotel by the Brooklyn/Battery Tunnel

You can get to the financial center via cab or car service. Court Express is a car service in the area which can give you good rates into the city. Using car service in Brooklyn is easy cause you just call ahead and reserve a car for a specific time. If you want to go the public trans. route you can take the B61 bus which you can catch about a block from the motel and then switch in downtown Brooklyn to the 2/3/4/5/or 6 trains. That gets you to the financial center in aprox. 35 - 40 minutes.

The Brooklyn Motor Inn is newly renovated but tucked away in a corner. Their picture on the webiste is kind deceiving. It shows the hotel right across from the Brooklyn Bridge. Seems like they ';spliced'; the pictures together. It is actually right across the entrance to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. accommodations look fine but if you%26#39;re coming to NY to visit NYC (Manhattan), it%26#39;s best to check out hotels in the city itself.

    central location 2 night stay

Please can anyone help, planning our trip for August next year. On our return from Las Vegas and Arizona we can fly back to the UK from NY Chicargo or Boston

We are a family with an 8 yr old who wants to see Statue of Liberty. I am not bothered about shopping and looking for a suggestions for a 2 night only stop over

How far from Newark and cost

Hotel location to suit a family at least 4 star

What can we do with only 1 day sight seeing

I am frightened of undergrounds, can we get about without using them. I know London is difficult and I avoid totally

NY is our first choice but is it the right choice?

Any help much appreciated %26amp; thanks

    central location 2 night stay

Good Morning- I just kind of stumbled across this but I think I can help!

NY is definately the best choice. I work there and have stayed in the city many times when I have late evenings. I have not taken a taxi from Newark in some time, but it should be around $50 US. Price of gas lately may change that. I prefer Newark to the other NY airports...it is much easier to manuever around.

For a hotel that is nice, affordable and in a good central location, I would choose the Warwick. The rooms are very spacious for a NY hotel. Some of the others are hipper, but the room is the size of the bed (very small). It is on 6th Ave (aka Avenue of the americas), is close to Central Park, great restaurants and is easy to get taxis, etc. Get a room with 2 beds and you will be very happy. Search google for good rates...

There are sooo many things to do for 1 day! The Statue of Liberty is an awesome sight...depends how ';up close and personal'; your daughter wants to get. I have never actually been there with her but have seen her from a boat many times or from the part of Manhatten known as Battery Park City. If you just want to see her from BPC and go, you will squeeze much more into your day. If you go out there and then to Ellis Island (which is interesting to Americans as this is where all the ancestors first came thru when they left their native lands) it will take most of your day. There is a lot of history there. It may not be as interesting for someone not looking for their heritage. You may want to take a boat called the ';cirle line'; which goes around the island. I have never taken this myself, but it is worth looking into. Right next to where it docks is the ';Intrepid';. THis is floating aircraft carrier museum. Again, I have not been myself, but it is really something to look at from the street and I always tell myself I will get there someday!

There are great museums in NY and the kids usually like the Natural HIstory musuem which I believe has a great dinosaur exhibit on now.

It is very easy to get around NY without using the subway. Taxis are not cheap if you get stuck in traffic. Our subways

are fairly easy to get around but I understand that you are not comfortable. No need to worry, you will be able to get around.

Hope this was helpful! HAve a wonderful time!

    central location 2 night stay

Thanks for that. Have you ever flown Continental Airlines?

Really looking forward to our 3 week trip Las Vegas for 3 days then on to a ranch for the night near Grand Canyon and a villa in the Phoenix area for 2 weeks plus now New York is looking like our base from the UK to start our holiday.

Glad to hear I can avoid your subway and still get about. I have hated trains for years and busy confined spaces.

    Thanks again

I would add a private or group bus tour of the city using New York party shuttle.

Times square and a trip up the Empire State Building are must-do%26#39;s:

    http://www.newyorkpartyshuttle.com/

Just have a moment for now, but wanted to mention that a nice way to see Lady Liberty from the water is to take the (free) Staten Island Ferry; It would probably be fun for your 8yr old.

Also, look into the open top bus tours -- they have many different routes to choose from %26amp; are a relaxing way to see the city.

You%26#39;ve gotten very good info so far. If your child wants to see the Statue of Liberty, NY is the ONLY choice ;)

One option for a hotel is staying downtonw at the Ritz Carlton Battery Park. It%26#39;s not as central as staying midtown, but it%26#39;s very close to the Statue and you could even get a room with a view of the Statue. This location would put you not only near the ferries (either the Staten Island which is fast and free or the statue%26#39;s own ferry where you can visit Liberty Island where the Statue is located along with the Ellis Island immigration museum) but also near the South Street Seaport, City Hall, Wall St. and other downtown sites. In August, using the NY Water Taxi would be a great way to get around and see the city. Their website is

    nywatertaxi.com

I think the NY Party Shuttle is also a great idea to see a lot of the city in a short time. It%26#39;s a 6 hr. tour starting at noon.

To get from Newark airport, you could either take public transport (what is best depends on where you%26#39;re staying) OR order a car service for a flat fare. Here%26#39;s a website with options and links

    http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/egtsfram.htm

The Embassy Suites is another downtown hotel option popular with families. It%26#39;s an all suite hotel.

If you want to stay midtown, the Doubletree Suites in Times Square is another popular family hotel.

Hey whiz you%26#39;re meant to be the serious one round these parts! You just made me laugh out loud! Way to go!

How far is it from brooklyn bridge to 139 flatbush avenue??

    Are going to taget.

Can i walk or is it to far?

    brooklyn bridge to flatbush ave

It%26#39;s a little less than 2 km from the Brooklyn end of the Brooklyn Bridge to 139 Flatbush Avenue.

    brooklyn bridge to flatbush ave

It%26#39;s about 1.10 miles from the bridge on the Brooklyn side. It%26#39;s walkable if you like to walk and the weather permits. If you do decide to walk, go to the famous Junior%26#39;s Cheescake restaurant located at 386 Flatbush Avenue Extension at Dekalb Avenue. You can go to their website at: http://www.juniorscheesecake.com/

Reasonably priced restaurant near the Shubert Theatre

Will be staying at the Belvedere(Sept 21-24) 48th %26amp; 8th and going to see Spamalot at the Shubert Theatre on 44th looking for a reasonably priced restaurant for dinner before the show. We are going to the 21 Club the next night so not looking to go overboard on the budget both nights. Just good food, anything but seafood, hubby not a fan. All suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Reasonably priced restaurant near the Shubert Theatre

try a restaurant on Restaurant Row

Reasonably priced restaurant near the Shubert Theatre

The most popular choice seems to be Joe Allen (www.joeallenrestaurant.com). Something to please almost everyone on their American menu. Very popular though, you%26#39;ll definitely need a reservation.

Other Restaurant Row places I can recommend are the Italians -- Orso, Lattanzi, Becco (though Becco%26#39;s seating is quite cramped, particularly upstairs).

Or, try the wonderful Virgil%26#39;s BBQ, on W. 44th just east of Broadway. Excellent BBQ - I just love their pulled pork sandwich. It%26#39;s a big family place and quite reasonable.

John%26#39;s Pizzeria is also on W. 44th St., just east of 8th Ave. It%26#39;s in a converted church. IMHO, the best pizza!

If you want pizza, John%26#39;s is a good idea. For Italian, Trattoria Trecolori is good reasonably priced on west 44 st.

Sams is on west 45 st b/w Broadway %26amp; 8th ave. Just plain American food with some Italian choices. More info here

    Spiderman 2

Hi Cathy. There are no such above ground trains in Manhattan. All the subways in Manhattan are underground. This little bit of fiction was also seen in the Batman movie. I guess the writers like the look of the train passing overhead. The subways outside Manhattan do run above ground. You can also take the Roosevelt Island tram.

    Spiderman 2

I%26#39;m sure it%26#39;s true, the bit in the movie was fictitious but the subway does go above ground. In fact, about 40% of the subway is above ground.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Subway

I don%26#39;t know of an above ground subway station in Manhattan proper. Above Central Park, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, sure.

Thank you, nets. As I%26#39;ve said before, when the subject matter is as good as New York City, it%26#39;s easy to come up with the words and pictures to, hopefully, do it justice!

Having said that, I%26#39;m looking forward to going back in June when the trees will be in full leaf and I can take even more photos.

June is a wonderful month to be in the city, but very hot lol..

Yes, but think how much more room we%26#39;ll have in our suitcases without all those overcoats and longjohns!

maidstone nic- just went on to your site- its fantastic!! something that caught my eye- the birthday sign for your son- what/where is hersheys? we%26#39;re going to ny for my husbands 50th and i%26#39;d love to do that for him

Thank you, Ken - glad you liked it.

Loopylouie, Hersheys is in Times Square (1593 Broadway at 48th Street to be precise) and the whole thing only takes about 5 minutes to set up and costs $5 - a real bargain (particularly if you%26#39;ve got someone to keep him distracted while you go in and set it up).

  • 2nd part of loooong trip report! Moving onto Day 4 + +

Ok, so I finished my last post with us going to bed happy (and a little drunk!) and looking forward to shopping at Canal St. the next day, Tuesday 23rd. Hehehe, it turned out we weren%26#39;t quite as prepared for Canal St as we thought....

    DAY 4 - Tuesday 23rd

We got up feeling ready to take on Chinatown, prepared to seek out little Chinese ladies whispering ';Gucci, Chanel?'; along the street, and follow them into hidden rooms and hallways. Our mission : to find the best fake handbags available! We jumped on the nr. 6 subway which took us all the way down to Canal St. (we basically took this subway whenever we were going Up- and Downtown, and took crosstown busses and taxis when we went...crosstown :)

Got off at Canal St. and exited the subway right in the middle of all the hub on the street. At first we felt like morons, standing around trying desperately to hear any whisperings from Chinese women, while pretending that we weren%26#39;t in case they were actually waiting for the bus or what not, since we didn%26#39;t want to offend anyone!! But it soon became apparent that most of the people hanging around on the street were scamming off handbags, and we soon got into the flow of things..

Once we got over our initial fear of following strangers into winding alleys (what one doesn%26#39;t do for good fakes, huh?), we were ready for some serious shopping. BUT - All the rooms were hot and airless, and one of the places we went to, I will never forget, the fumes from the fake leather and whatever the walls were built of were intense, and my eyes started stinging sooo bad!!! And we seriously just couldn%26#39;t get a real breath, it was so hot and crowded with other CRAZY shoppers like us...

After we surfaced from that underground H*LL, we gave up. Kate managed to find a bag and a wallet she liked, but even so, we felt that putting ourselves through that ordeal was just SO not worth it...It was really fun in the beginning, but if you find yourself in an airless room that you cannot breath in, just leave, because to be honest, most of the bags looked and felt fake anyway...Hang out on street level, maybe check out a couple of back-rooms if you want, but have fun outside, thats where you will see the real Chinatown, and all it has to offer.

Anyways, after that memorable experience, we were both EXHAUSTED and gross and sweaty. We literally dragged our feet along the rest of Canal St, occasionally pausing to look at something, then exclaiming, ';ugh, I need to sit down!!'; and plodding on... :) We eventually managed to get ourselves to Soho, and found the most lovely, little French bistro on the corner of...I can%26#39;t remember, but it was a couple blocks into Soho...We sat there for maybe 2 and a half hours just giggling over the traumatic experience that was Canal St. and checking out our purchases...

After our lunch of French Onion soup for me, and salad for Kate, we decided we had enough energy to move again, and wandered some more around Soho, slowly and casually, just checking out the stores, etc. We were about to jump on the train home, when we talked to my godmother (GM) and decided to head to her place on the UWS for..hehe, Chinese takeaway! Very relaxing and chill, just hung at hers and watched a movie while we ate.

By the time the movie was over, Kate and I decided we needed to get ourselves to a bar and have a couple of drinks, so we went to this place on 3rd where we could sit outside and chat and watch all the cute couples on dates! Seriously, I have never seen so many people on dates! Cute! Its so obvious too, people holding hands slightly awkwardly, looking just a little self-conscience...awww :) So anyway, we sat there and had a few margueritas, when we got hit on by a couple of guys! Hehe, they turned out to be pretty nice and talkative, so we had a couple drinks with them, and headed home to bed (by ourselves, OBVIOUSLY) for a much needed good-nights sleep.

    DAY 5 - Wednesday 24th.

Today was a big day for us!! :) We got up later than planned after such an exhausting previous day, and feeling much better, got on the subway and took it to Wall Street. We took the nr.6 again, and got off at its last stop (Brooklyn Bridge stop?) where we literally just went to the other side of the platform to get on the connecting train and took it two stops to the Financial District. Easy-peasy.

Once we got out of the subway we started walking towards Wall St. and the Stock Exchange. That was pretty cool actually, and we even made ourselves take a picture outside of it, even with all the cute young businessmen walking around ;) (hello future husbands!! hehehe, kidding) From there we headed down to Battery Park, passing the Bull on the way. I would have actually liked to take a pic, but there were tons of people milling around, so we decided that we didn%26#39;t really need a pic of a bulls *ss :)

We milled around Battery Park, and tried to look for the WaterTaxi stop (we had tickets, but even with all our good intentions, we never managed to use them!!) and saw the Statue of Liberty from a great distance. From there we headed towards Ground Zero.

I have been there once before, on the other side of the site. This time we were on the side where the subway is, and the long time-line poster on the fence. This was Kate%26#39;s first time there since the towers fell, she had been there before, and had dinner on one of them. Very very sad experience, and it was no easier being there a second time. I was glad I was wearing huge dark sunglasses, which I also kept on in St. Pauls...I can%26#39;t even imagine what it must be like to have to pass that every day on your way to work.....

After that, we took a few minutes to calm ourselves, and got something to drink to swallow down the bumps in our throats. We had absolutely no desire to shop AT ALL, but knowing that we wouldn%26#39;t be in this area again, we forced ourselves into Century 21. This was a similar Canal St. experience for us, too many people, alot of crap, with some good finds in between. We each came away with some stuff we both really liked, but it was a bit of a waste of time. We were glad we only spent an hour there..

We were hungry and whiny by then, so we got a slice of pizza across the street, proving to ourselves that we really aren%26#39;t New Yorkers (yet :) by cutting our pizza slices in half with a knife! eeheeheee.... felt slightly silly at that point..All you New Yorkers will know what I am talking about I hope?? For those who don%26#39;t, the ';real'; NYC way to eat one of those huge slices of greasy pizza (yuuum) is basically holding it in one hand and more or less folding it over :)

We headed home from there to shower and get ready for our evening with my cousin and his BF! We met up with them at Roberto%26#39;s, a great Italian place on I think 60th%26amp;8th. Had an amazing meal, with the staff sending over a free starter! This happened alot with my cuz%26amp;BF, they don%26#39;t cook themselves, so they eat out ALOT! Really great place, and filled up within the hour!

From there we walked down to Booth Theater to see the Pillowman. Everything you have read on TA is pretty much the truth. We personally loved it, found it really interesting, very deep and dark, and brilliant acting. Billy Crudup was just fantastic, but I have to say, Michael Stuhlbarg, who plays his brother, was also just amazing.

Once the play was over, we made our way to Times Square to see the lights and people. We decided we needed some drinks after the play, as someone very smart on TA had advised me to plan something fun for afterwards! We went to Ruby Foos at the ';top'; of Times Square, and had a couple drinks there, and shared some enourmous desserts. Great place, the food smelled fabulous, and there were still lots of people there at 10! The drinks were pretty good too.

BF left us at about 11.30 to head home, and cousin strolled with us to walk up along 5th Av. That was really fun, to be alone on 5th Av without the throngs of people, and look at all the amazing window displays...We just chatted about everything and nothing, and eventually got into cabs and went home. This was such a great day, we really felt we did and saw alot, and the play was just fantastic. We went home feeling full, but really happy.

Ok, I am going to do Day 6 as well, just to keep this in even numbers! This hopefully won%26#39;t be quite as long as the other days, since we didn%26#39;t do too too much...

    DAY 6 - Thursday 25th

This was moving day for us, as we were leaving our B%26amp;B in Murray Hill, and taking over my cousins apartment on the Upper East Side. He actually went to stay with his BF for 6 whole days so we could stay at his place! How nice is that!!? So we got there about noon, unpacked slightly, and headed out to the Guggenheim!

This was fun to see, and the exhibit was very interesting. We didn%26#39;t stay for very long, kind of sauntered down the levels, stopping if anything caught our eye. Once outside again, we decided to head downtown, though we can%26#39;t actually remember why, or what we did there! :) We are assuming for shopping...

Anyway, our memory comes back to us during our walk up 8th Av to the Time Warner Building, to hit some of the stores in there! We didn%26#39;t find much, but had fun trying things on, and refreshing our make-up at Sephora :) By this point, it was nearly quarter after 7, and we had dinner plans with my cousin and his BF, and also my godmother!

This dinner was our treat, as cousin and godmother had been paying for all our meals so far, no matter how much we insisted they let us pay! We met them at Citrus, this GREAT restaurant on Columbus and 69th??? I%26#39;m pretty sure it was right around there at least. This place is amazing, it has a very broad menu, and they have a fabulous sushi bar, which is what we all had. Cousin%26amp;BF come here alot, and we got seated at the best table, overlooking the whole restaurant.

We all gorged ourselves on amazing sushi, and just when we thought we couldn%26#39;t eat a bite more, the owner sent over three different desserts, on the house! And they were just divine...After dinner, we all headed over to BF%26#39;s apartment, a couple blocks away. We had a nightcap, said our goodbyes for the evening, and headed home. Again, another amazing evening with great family and friends. And I also just loved the UWS, it turned out to be one of my favorite neighbourhoods, especially Columbus Av.

Alrighty, this will just have to do for today!!!! This sounds crazy, but I could actually keep going, I am so into it! But if I hope to keep anyone%26#39;s attention, I know I need to wrap it up :)

Should I post the photos on the last installment so they correspond to my installments, or do you all want them now? You choose!! :)

2nd part of loooong trip report! Moving onto Day 4 + +

Well done, Tina - another excellent installment! Can we have the photos now please?

2nd part of loooong trip report! Moving onto Day 4 + +

I%26#39;m loving every second of this.

I%26#39;m tempted to say %26#39;give us the photo%26#39;s now!%26#39; but at the same time I always put off things I%26#39;m looking forward to (I NEVER open my presents on Christmas Eve!)

Aww - never mind - GIVE US THE PHOTOS NOW! hehe

Really great! I feel like I%26#39;m having fun and I%26#39;m just sitting here in pjs and having coffee, half-watching the US Open. Can%26#39;t wait for pictures and chap. 3.

BTW, I think that some recent queries (dimsum67, babymac, amstanley and NETS come to mind) have asked about neighborhoods. I think you would be great at describing the feel of the diffferent areas for them! Besides, I need to finish my coffee...

You cut your pizza in half???? Ha ha ha ha ha!

Hard to describe Pillowman, isn%26#39;t it?

The UWS is my favorite area. I%26#39;ll speak for Daisiegee, too, and say it%26#39;s also hers.

    More please.

Enjoying this very much Tina. At some point I think you should attach all the reports together on one thread. ';;) Post links to pics when you%26#39;re ready. ;)

I know, once we looked around and saw everybody else with their pizza slices, we felt like such dopes! We learned our lesson! Hehehe....here is the link for the photos, let me know if it works/doesn%26#39;t work!

    snapfish.com/thumbnailshare/鈥?7534728

By the way, I am the short one in all the pictures!! :) Oh, and I%26#39;d be happy to describe the feel of the different neighbourhoods at some point!

Sounds GREAT tina... though, the pictures link doesn%26#39;t work for me...

I%26#39;m loving this...could almost be there with you with such great descriptions. And Bettina was right about the UWS being a favourite of mine!

Tried the link and it wouldn%26#39;t work, got me to a log on page! Is this just me ?

Forgot to say...how great is your cousin? Wish I had one like that.

Tina, I%26#39;ve just read the small print on Snapfish and it appears that the only way that you can share your photos is for them to send an email invitation to everyone on your behalf! This isn%26#39;t going to work if you want to share them with everyone on this forum. Why not check out photobucket or even webshots?

  • Beaux Arts Hotel E 44th Street

I posted this message on Gotham Center but am still waiting for a reply (I think they%26#39;re a much older crowd over there - probably still using dial-up) :-)

Here%26#39;s the question for you young whippersnappers:

I am curious to know what building stands where the hotel I stayed in in 1966 used to be. It was the Beaux Arts Hotel and was in E 44th Street. Anyone know what is there now?

Trivia Fact: ask any Englishman where he was when England won the world cup (soccer) and, in much the same way as Americans of a similar age know where they were when JFK was shot, he will know instantly. I was in the Beaux Arts Hotel!

Beaux Arts Hotel E 44th Street

It could be the Dylan Hotel on EAST 41 st or the Mansfield on WEST 44 st.

Beaux Arts Hotel E 44th Street

You mean they moved it? That%26#39;s pretty cool!

Seriously, Whiz, it was definitely somewhere on E 44th Street (on the south side of the street I think). The building might still be there for all I know but I%26#39;m guessing it has been demolished to make way for something grander.

There is an apartment block (strangely enough called The Beaux Arts) which used to be a hotel on that street. Could that be it ?

I tried to find any photos of the BA Apartments - all I could find were some very small ones that looked very swanky. It%26#39;s possible but not conclusive.

    I found mention of the Beaux Arts Apartments at 307 east 44 st, ';one of a pair of 17 story apt houses designed by the firm Raymond Hood Godley %26amp; Fouilboux in 1929-30. The other of the pair is on the south side of east 44 st.';

This is mentioned in a report on the feasiblity of a 2nd ave subway (which never happened). It%26#39;s on page G-1-10 here

    鈥yc.ny.us/capconstr/鈥ppendixg_1.pdf

Whiz: I would have expected it to say something like ';converted from hotel'; or something similar. I will just have to take a wander down 44th Street next month and see if anything looks familiar. Well done for finding that reference though.

There%26#39;s a link to the buildings mentioned here...they have a contact button for questions as well. www.brodskyorg.com/BODY.cfm?Building_ID=103

Daisiegee, how on earth did you happen to know this? I%26#39;m in awe!

Well, in between looking longingly at apatment listings, I%26#39;ve done a bit of searching. The house is a tip mind you, as no housework has been done!

The two buildings, at 307 and 310 E. 44th, were built at the same time, around 1929, and are currently owned by the Brodsky Organization and operated as long-term rentals. The architects who designed them also designed the now-defunct Beaux Arts Institute of Design (on the south side of the street, currently the Egyptian Mission to the UN). In the first 40 or so years of their existence, 307 and 310 were operated as apartment hotels (as were many other NY buildings at that time) for both permanent and transient residents. There was a restaurant in the buildings, so the apartments (then and to this day) did not have full kitchens. During the apartment hotel period prominent writers and artists lived in the buildings (including, I am told, an early director of the Museum of Modern Art). During the 50s and 60s, following the establishment of the U.N. many diplomats stayed in the buildings during UN sessions (these days many of them stay at the Millenium UN Plaza Hotel, which is on the same block).

restaurants with an aquarium in NY

    Hi there

does anyone know of any restaurants in new york which have big saltwater aquariums which you can watch whilst eating your dinner? i know it sounds silly but there is one in the burj al Arab in Dubai and it is so amazing. I mean big tanks and not just your average goldfish bowl!

    Thanks

restaurants with an aquarium in NY

There%26#39;s an aquarium in the floor at Aja (Asian bistro and lounge). Tse Yang, an upscale Chinese rest. has a large tank. There are a number of seafood and Asian restaurants that have fish tanks from which your food comes. ;)

Probably not what you had in mind but wasn%26#39;t there a huge fish tank in a bathroom? (was it featured in SATC?)

I%26#39;m sure you don%26#39;t want to eat your food there but it looked fun!

Day trip tp New York City ...

    Hi Gurus:

I am looking for some advice for a day trip to NY. Hubby and I were thinking of covering central park, ground zero, evening cruise and if time permits time square, since we have been to time square a few times.

We were planning to get to mid town Penn Station by noon.

    1. Is it all doable in one day?

    2. What subway would we take from Penn station to central park? Which area of central park should we cover? How many hours should we budget for central park? What are the central park must dos?

    3. Which subway would get us from central park to downtown?

    4. What is a good cruise line to take a harbor cruise for a couple of hours? What%26#39;s the cost and where does the cruise start from? Again how do we get there from downtown?

Any advice would be appreciated. Waiting to hear from you all ...

    Thanks,

    Smili

Day trip tp New York City ...

My first thought it, if you%26#39;ve been to Time Square already, skip it and go to another nabe, such as Soho, The Village or the Upper West Side. More later.

Day trip tp New York City ...

Thanks queens boulevard, thats a nice suggestion ... waiting to hear more from you ... and what amongst those would you recommend. I know a little bit about the village, whats there on the upper west side and in soho?

    Later,

    Smili

What you could do is get a subway Uptown, and enter Central Park around the 70s. Walk slowly through and take it all in, and then exit when you get to the Plaza and 5th Av. Then you could walk along 5th Av, and if you feel the need, walk over a few blocks to Times Square for a quick peak. Then jump on a subway downtown to Ground Zero, then head to Battery Park for your cruise...That way you will more or less be moving in a straight line from uptown to downtown without jumping all over the place..Oh, and we took the nr.6 subway all over the place, its a straight line, and goes all the way downtown...

No it%26#39;s an Irish pub, also i made a typo, if it makes any difference it%26#39;s Jack Demseys (no %26#39;p%26#39;). The only scottish pub in manhattan is the St. Andrews Restaurant %26amp; Bar on West 44th street between 6th ave and Broadway. I don%26#39;t know if they are showing the games:

RNnyusa-You know what ? , i was just reading through this topic and i thought... oh my god, you where in an irish pub maybe wearing a r****rs top ..just as well you were in NYC , if it was over here you%26#39;d get lynched unfortunately!!:-) safe bet is to wear a scotland top ...great fans ,no trouble and a reputation second to absolutely no-one !!! not bad result either :-) ! ps another safe alternative is to wear a st.johnstone top ..no ones ever heard of my lot over there lol!!

Hello again Kezz, today i walked by the St. Andrews%26#39; sister bar/lounge on 33rd street called Stout, and it is also showing all the world cup qualifiers. It looks more trendy and less of a drinking man%26#39;s pub than Demseys:

Does anyone have any recommendations of apartment rental agencies or serviced apartments agencies in New York City. Not looking at individually owned apartments (find the fittings somethmes a bit less than desirable and the deposit requirements usually extremely restrictive - i.e large amounts up front in addition to the amount for the actual weeks rental) but maybe one owner comlexes etc. Hope this makes sense- thanks.

I%26#39;m using City Lights for my upcoming trip. I can%26#39;t yet vouch for the quality of the space that I%26#39;ve reserved, but the company comes highly recommended.

    citylightsbedandbreakfast.com/pages/4/index.鈥?/a>

I booked 10 days in September at a fully equipped studio (unhosted) in Hells%26#39;s Kitchen for $150/night. Also, because I wanted to eat-in to save $$$, I wanted a place with a kitchen. And a private bath. I%26#39;m pleased with my choice.

The staff at City Lights have been extremely helpful, prompt in their replies, and they found a location for me that is convenient to where I need to be.

I only needed to put up 20% at the time of my reservation. The remainder I pay directly to the landlord (or his lackey) upon arrival. No security fee. I think I did pay a one-time fee of something like $21 for City Lights%26#39; service, however. (I%26#39;ve booked private accommodations online before and have been disappointed a few times. I didn%26#39;t want to risk it in NYC.)

I%26#39;m arriving on the 9th, so if you haven%26#39;t booked anything yet, I can let you know how great (or not) the place they found for me is. Good luck!

So much great and helpful info here, I have come back to ask for advice on plotting a walking tour that we plan for our one day/night in Manhattan. We are avid distance walkers and look forward to this pleasant challenge.

We will arrive early AM this Friday at Battery Park. Plan on loading up on Dim Sum in Chinatown (suggestions?) and then off for a marathon foot tour of NYC. From Chinatown to Central Park

Would love to get a good feel for the uniqueness and energy of the city. Love ethnic enclaves, vintage off-beat shops and all things exclusive to NYC. Allowing plenty of stops to browse and nosh.

I know this is a broad question but what route do you suggest: EAST

LES, East Village, Union Square, Gramercy, Flatiron

    Or WEST

    Tribeca, Soho, West Village, Chelsea

We are somewhat familiar with Times Sq, so we wont linger there long. Probably want to pass through the NBC area on the way to the park. Will explore the park for a short while and explore either the upper east or west sides (which do you prefer?) and then take the subway back to our hotel near the WTC. A short rest, a long shower and back out the door for dinner and dancing / music. (thanks for the previous info on night spots - earlier post)

Help with our loooong NYC walking tour

This is a hard choice. I would recommend the ';west'; route and also the Upper West Side.

Than you for your input. I am sure both have their own charms and fans.

Since you qualify this as a hard choice, it sounds as I could not go wrong with either one. Any others wish to weigh in?

Yes, their are plenty things to see on the LES, E. Vil. Union SQ, Gramercy and Flatiron but the west route is a bit more interesting. IMO, unless you are shopping or visiting museums, the UWS is much more interesting the the UES.

    e. vill. must be away for the weekend or she would tell you why you should start there.

Yes. E.Vill was very helpful during an earlier inquiry. I certainly know which route she would choose. Funny, I didn%26#39;t get the screen name connection until a few days later.

Here%26#39;s a summary tackling lower Manhattan, with options for either Chinatown to Soho or Chinatown to LES.

(NOTE: if you%26#39;re going ot the Lower East Side on Friday, you better get there kinda early, since many of the older Jewish stores will close early. (Check ahead for their hours.)

Check out http://www.lowereastsideny.com/ for a list of stores, phone numbers, etc.)

Having said that, starting from the Battery, I%26#39;d go up Broadway. When you get to Liberty Street, make a left. Make a right onto Church St. You%26#39;ll be right in front of WTC/Ground Zero and Century 21.

Continue up Church St. to Chambers Street. You will pass the big post office (go inside to see great recovery job after 9/11. This building was basically a chemical cesspool.) On Chambers are some stores and small eateries - nothing too memorable, but gives you a good feel of the area.

You can zig zag west (to your left) for Tribeca. Go left on Chambers to Greenwich Street and go north to around Reade or Franklin. You%26#39;ll pass Bazzini%26#39;s - a great gourmet food store that had the wherewithal to turn itself from a mom%26amp;pop wholesale candy and nut shop into a yuppie food haven!

Make two rights and go back to Chambers Street, and then a left onto Chambers, and head to Centre Street. You%26#39;ll be headed straight to the massive Municipal Building (get a marriage license here!) Make a left onto Centre. Walk through the municipal court area (you%26#39;ll see the ';Night Court'; building to your right) and it will turn into Lafayette Street.

Continue north and this will take you to Chinatown. You can zig-zag around until you get to Canal St. Go right on Canal. I%26#39;d walk east to somewhere like Elizabeth St. and take a left (north) to Grand St. Take Grand west (left) back to say, Lafayette and go back south (left) to Canal.

I know you wanted to go from Chinatown to the LES, but this is a good escape out of Chinatown, into Soho: Go west (right) on Canal and make a right (north) on Broadway. I%26#39;d then take a left on any street (maybe Grand again) and go to West Broadway. Make a right onto West Broadway and now you%26#39;re in the heart of Soho.

Click on this interactive map to see what%26#39;s on each street in Soho.

    http://www.artseensoho.com/arrival.html

If you want to got from Chinatown into the LES, continue north on Elizabeth St. Start meandering east (to your right.) You can make a right onto Hester, Grand or Delancey. When you get to around Christie or Orchard Street, you can zig zag around (go south on one, and then north on another).

The LES is bordered by Hester St. on the south, Bowery on the west, Houston St. at the north, and it goes all the way under the Williamsburg Bridge to the east.

Again, check out http://www.lowereastsideny.com/ for info.

    Queens,

    As always, terific info -

Really good tip about the early LES closings on Friday. Would have never thought of that on my own.

Your%26#39;e quite welcome! Let%26#39;s take advantage of my insomnia, shall we? You know, you could also do a big, giant loop, viz:

If you want to end up in a more gay area at night, I would go from Chinatown, to the LES, up to the East Village, then either (a) north to Gramercy/Flatiron area and west to Chelsea, and south to W. Village, or

    (b) west across central Greenwich Village (3rd or 8th Streeet) to the West Village, ending up in either the West Village or north in Chelsea for dinner.

If you%26#39;re not gay, or you want to end up in a more grunge/goth/art/student area, I%26#39;d do the reverse: go from Chinatown to Soho, up through central Village, west on West 3rd or West 8th to West Village, north to Chelsea, east to Flatiron/Gramercy, south to Union Square and East Village.

If you want to eat in a slightly more posh, over-30, all-grown-up Gen-X, got-money-to-spend-area, try to end up in the Flatiron/Gramercy area for dinner. Nice places to eat on Park Ave. from around 16th to 20th. Also, B%26#39;way around 19th and 20th sts.

  • Central Park

My wife pointed me to this forum and I am becoming addicted. I need a new fix -

She raised the possibility of a visit to Central Park during our one day visit to NYC. We will be walking major part of the city and will include this if the folks here believe it would be worth it.

It is a little intimidating as it looks so huge of a space on maps. Are there particular areas of the park that you find especially worth seeing.

    Thanks

    Central Park

Central Park is the heart and soul of this city. I couldn%26#39;t live here without it. My favorite parts are the Lake and the Ramble, Bethesda Terrace, the Conservatory Garden, Harlem Meer, Conservatory Water, the Mall, and lots of bridges, including the Bow Bridge and Gothic Bridge.

Don%26#39;t worry too much about getting lost. While the park is 843 acres, it is only three blocks wide (granted, they%26#39;re long blocks!).

If I were showing visitors around and they had only one place to see, I%26#39;d take them to the park for sure!

    Central Park

My wife and I were fortunate enough to book a ';big apple greeter.'; I think the website is www.bigapplegreeter.org. It%26#39;s tough to get one but sign up and hope for the best. The greeters are all volunteers who just love NY.

We just specified central park and we got this great man who knew also volunteered at the central park conservency. He knew it inside and out! There is no charge at all or any pressure to donate. Of course we did later but it%26#39;s up to you.

Our walking tour lasted 4 hours - we were dead at the end but we saw central park! My wife was in heaven - long walk in the very beautiful park.

We were even luckier - we got this great woman with a very definite look of Catherine Deneuve! She was great. What%26#39;s more we had The Gates too and we saw Yoko Ono!

Sorry, I think its the 14.5% Australian wine I%26#39;ve been drinking to accompany the barbie! But, all of the above is true - just ask Bettina!

    Thanks to all. Central Park has been added to the ';to do list';

By the way, what are ';The Gates';?

Anywhere in Central Park is nice to have a bit of a breather from the city. As you only have a day you won%26#39;t have much time, Battery park is nice and is near attractions although you don%26#39;t get that feeling of getting out of the city.

nyc hotels, do prices get any cheaper on a last minute...

as the title says, does the hotels in manhatten get any cheaper on a last minute basis, or do they all hold out for the the full guest rate?, looking for accommodation for 3 adults and 2 kids (7 and 15) hotel prices seem weyyy expensive and wondered whether its any good waiting til the last minute or even turning up on the day loking for the best rate.

nyc hotels, do prices get any cheaper on a last minute...

I would never show up without a reservation---too iffy, IMO. If you are looking for cheap rates, try looking at www.betterbidding.com Other posters who have used this site have recommended it. It also depends on what time of year you are traveling. Hotels in NYC that have seasonal rates, offer their cheapest rates from 1/1-2/28. Room rates are really climbing in NYC as of late. Just note that if you find a hotel with incredibly cheap rates, there is a good reason for it. Most likely, it is a fleabag dump. If there are some hotels you are considering, I would recommend reading the reviews posted in TA. It will help you come to an informed decision.

nyc hotels, do prices get any cheaper on a last minute...

look at embassy suites it is down town but lovely by the looks of it and the reviews and when we booked was half the price of say the doubletree. It will bebig enough to fit you all in and even with a subway 7 day pass (if its a week you are there for etc) it works out way way cheaper, we saved so much money.....over a 拢1000GBP! so in fact it was more than half cheaper!

thanks for the replies. we, are only on %26#39;stopover%26#39; (3 nights max) on the way to the gulf coast in florida, at the start of october this year. considered staying out of manhatten, but then again, its only for a couple of days, and would probably be best to %26#39;experience%26#39; the full nyc, from manhatten? i%26#39;ll nosey round the embassy suites site and see what they have to offer....any more help gratefully recieved. cheers, stu

Prices are very high this fall, period. The good exchange rate for you guys is one major reason. If you are you looking for one room for 5, that adds to the problem. What are your specific dates and your budget?

PS. Don%26#39;t even consider waiting til the last minute for a group of 5 (2 is another story). What you could do is book something NOW that%26#39;s cancelleable and shop closer to the date for something less. Look on travelzoo.com

dates 1st to the 4th oct (3 nights). budget, well before looking at the prices was $100 per night per room (with two rooms required), but after looking at the current prices, i suppose double that or slightly more.

What about staying in jersey (or other %26#39;nearby%26#39; areas, probably arriving in to newark) and travelling in? would that be feasable/ sensible or be more hassle than worth? we have a built in baby sitter (the mother-in-law) for the evenings/nighttime trips in to the bars/restaurants.

I%26#39;ve compiled a list of options for NJ from posts here etc.

    www.broadwayfocus.com/nj_nyc/

If you were staying for a week or more staying outside the city might make sense. But to me, personally, I think for a short stay it%26#39;s a waste of time.

If you disagree, I do see availability at the Sheraton on the Hudson in Weehawken, NJ for $229/night for a room with a king bed and a double sofa bed or 2 double beds and a sofa bed. So you could get 2 rooms there for $460/night plus tax. The ferry that takes you across the Hudson to midtown NY is $5/person a trip though so $25 for each trip for the group.

I see availability of a one bedroom suite (2 double beds in the living room and a sofabed for 2 in the sitting room) at the Salisbury Hotel for your dates on Expedia.com for $307/night. (the hotel itself shows sold out). That%26#39;s the cheapest thing I see for your dates. You%26#39;d all be sharing 1 bathroom.

I also saw some availability at some of the Affinia hotels for a 2 bedroom 2 baths suite for $49/night. (Look at the Eastgate Towers, the Affinia Manhattan and the Affinia Dumont).

    Very nice job broadwayny :))

I should have said the Sheraton price I saw was on Sheraton.com

I%26#39;d still stay in NYC for your 3 days.

    thanks, nywhiz :-)

I have a feeling, that page will be referenced often.

I compiled it even though I totally agree with you that staying in Manhattan is the best.

I was thinking of Chelsea Piers (I%26#39;ve never been) followed by the brewery there, but their website makes it seem like it%26#39;s either largely for children or you need to formally arrange something with them.

You%26#39;re thoughts and suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

    College buddies reunited...Chelsea Piers?

It would seem to me that the friends would want to catch up and talk during the day. What about about a boat ride of some sort during the day followed by bowling and dinner/drinks at bowlmor?

I%26#39;ll have to see if the wives show up. If they do those are great ideas. If it turns out to be mostly guys I might run with the Bowlmor idea, but I can%26#39;t see them digging the boat ride (although I would like it)! Thanks for your help!!!

How is Bowlmor on a Saturday night?

I think chelsea piers is a great idea! If you want to splurge, you can book some time in their driving range, and hit balls over the Hudson River (not really - there%26#39;s a net.)

Spending 4 days on LI and 4 days in Manhattan - friends recently said it has been humidity hell. Best guess for what to wear during this time. Thanks for any suggestions.

You can never tell with New York weather. But at the time you are coming, the worst of the humidity should be over. Today was a beautiful, warm low humidity day. In another week, it should be even cooler.

Wear summer clothes, but have a few long sleeved shirts and pants, and a light jacket, just in case it gets cold at night on the Island. You didn%26#39;t say where on the Island you%26#39;ll be, but if you%26#39;re near the water, it gets pretty nippy at night.

my flight will land at JFK around 5.30 pm. would it be too tight time wise to catch a 7.59 pm flight from LGA? the other option is to hang around the airport until an early morning flight the next day.

what is the best way to get from one airport to the other? shuttle bus?

    thanks for your help.

I would take a cab since time is of the essence, but if your plane arrives early, and you clear customs quickly (ie, before 6pm), you can go for the bus (leaves on the hour and 30 after).

It will all depend on how quickly you clear immigration. I think you can get there via cab in less than the 30 minute estimated on that website. But hard to say if your flight will be on time or not.

I think I%26#39;d go for it. If I miss it, then put myself on standby for the morning flight and get a good night sleep somewhere near.

If you do decide to take a cab: Take the Van Wyck Expressway north ou of JFK to the Grand Central Parkway. Take the GCP West in the direction of the Triboro Bridge. The Grand Central Pkwy will take you to LGA.
