Broadwaybox or tkts booth once arriving

I think we will get tickets to the Producers. With the discount code I found we could get the tickets for 66.25 + a lot of service charges totaling 147 for both. Can we get them for less if we wait to go to the booth on the show day? We are going on Tuesday so I don%26#39;t think they will sell out.

Any help will be apprecited.

Robyn

Broadwaybox or tkts booth once arriving

You will probably get them for a bit less at TKTS but you can%26#39;t be sure that they will be available and if they are you will have to settle for the seats that they give you.

Broadwaybox or tkts booth once arriving

You%26#39;ll get them for 50% off + $3/ticket handling fee at TKTS

I hardly ever use the TKTS booth.

I%26#39;m particular about where I sit, and I get better choice buying tickets online with a discount code even though I am saving only 35-40%.

Ok...next question....if I buy online, do you all have a preference for orchestra level or mezzaine level? For ex. I can get Row h right orch. 11 or 13 seats from aisle. Or I found Row s center orch. or pretty close in on the mezzanine level in the center. CLOSEST IN or further back with a more center seat?

Thanks

Since I usually see a show alone, I get pretty good seat locations.

I like to be near the aisle, about 5-8 rows back in orchestra.

So seats 2,4 or 1,3 or 100-1xx are my favorites.

Hardly ever sit in mezzanine but if I do, closer to the front and center the better.

Weirdo Beardo Shops

Hello people, I am off to New York at the end of November (just before Thanksgiving) and was just wondering if anyone had any tips for good weird clothing shops anywhere. I have quite strange taste, not goth but getting there. Really love Paul Frank clothes and retro/vintage stuff. Also love skinny jeans and converse trainers. Would appreciate any tips for cool clothes/shoes/accessories stores. (I know about Rickys, last time I was in the city I bought a brilliant Parcel ghetto blaster bag). Thanks!

Weirdo Beardo Shops

Hit Alphabets..there are a few locations in the city.

251 E Houston St, New York, 10002 - (212) 777-8194

115 Avenue A, New York, 10009 - (212) 475-7250

2284 Broadway, New York, 10024 - (212) 579-5702

They were one of the very first people to carry Paul Frank, and still have some of the best selection in town.

Weirdo Beardo Shops

Oh and also do Tokio 7 in the East Village....

64 E 7th St, New York, 10003 - (212) 353-8443 (b/n 2nd %26amp; 3rd)

It%26#39;s a Vintage Designer Consignment Shop run by these really fun Japanese people with really great eclectic tastes.

Laura Ashley is a weird clothing shop.

Dolly - I swear, I fell off my chair!

Hee....hee!! You laugh, but my taste in clothing and stuff is quite weird and I absolutely cannot live without my Laura Ashley hypo-allergenic pillows. ($12.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond)

thanks cbcito, i will definitely try these.

dont reckon i%26#39;ll try Laura Ashley, unless I%26#39;m in the need of some nice paisley curtains or a rather fetching floral gown DollyLevy

Another place to hit is... Air Market

97 3rd Ave, New York, 10003 - (212) 995-5888

I do a lot of work with Toy and Novelty companies and people are constantly going there to buy things to knock off for Mass Market. I think they were one of the very first places that carried Parcel bags in New York.

How marvellous! I love Parcel bags, will definitely be going there.

Is TJ Maxx any good for weird stuff, in our equivalent (TK Maxx) they sometimes sell Parcel bags and a lot of cool jackets and tshirts and stuff. Can the same be said for the New York shop?

Hiya TraceyBunny~

Hey, New Yorkers, help me out here...

Aren%26#39;t there a bunch of second hand stores on East 23d. I forget where, but I made the rounds last year when there.

Some are run by rather high-brow groups, like the Opera Society, I think.

Also, depending on how much time you have, and just how much you like digging through old clothes, there is the Good Will Warehouse (or is it Salvation Army) just full of clothes, tschotschkies, accessaries, some old cosutme jewellery and just a bunch of fun junk. I love digging around in there.

That%26#39;s up in Hell%26#39;s Kitchen, not too far from the Hell%26#39;s Kitchen Flea Market.

I%26#39;ve found some amazing things at both the used clothes stores and Good Will.

Cheers,

Dev

Beacon%26#39;s Closet in Williamsburg and Park Slope (both in Brooklyn) is my favorite vintage clothing shop in the city.

Tanger, Riverhead

How long does it take to get to from Penn Station? Does anyone know what the fare is too?

Thank you!

You%26#39;d take a bus. It%26#39;s probably 2-2 1/2 hrs. Woodbury Commons is the more usual trip from NYC. It%26#39;s 1 1/2 hrs. You could also do Jersey Gardens which is only 1/2 hr. and bus fare is much less. Buses for all of these leave from Port Authority bus terminal, 42 st %26amp; 8th ave.

jerseygardens.com

Besides, no tax on clothing in NJ, not so for NY, and much closer, as previously noted.

Thanks!

Ive been Woodbury before, going to go again but im prob also going to go Tanger and Sacarcus (is that right)?

Secaucus. Before going to multiple malls, I%26#39;d suggest you compare the list of stores at each. Lots of duplication. Can%26#39;t imagine wasting so many days at malls. There%26#39;s such good shopping in NYC.

Yeh true, its a quick trip, we will have 3 full days, we thought one def in woodbury, one in either jersey gardens/tanger/seacaucss and one day in Times Sq? We are only coming for shopping to be honest as we have both been to NY before and seen all the sights etc....

If you go to Tanger,Riverhead It will take a full day. It is at least a 2+ hour train or bus ride from Manhattan. It has a lot of the same stores as the others . Also NY sales tax is 8.25 / 8.5 % and NJ is only 6% and no tax on clothes. Don%26#39;t waste any time going to the Harmond Cove outlets . They are really spread out and it%26#39;s alot of walking and the shops are not that good. Jersey Gardens is like a mall all the shops are inside.

Good luck

Secaucus/Harmond Cove. It you like to shop you may like to check out Canal St in manhattan.

to further elaborate on Secaucus

the #320 bus from Port Authority serves two big clusters of shops - those at the Plaza at Harmon Meadow and the Mill Creek Mall at Harmon Meadow

the list of shops don%26#39;t seem that impressive to me

www.harmonmeadow.com/pages/mappage.html

the #129 bus from Port Authority serves the Secaucus Outlets

www.harmonmeadow.com/pages/secaucusmap.html

the names of stores seem more like what people would be looking for if they go outlet shopping; but the stores are spread out

not all together in one big building

Thanks, think i will avoid Tanger and visit Jersey Gardens!

Question for the NYC experts

Hello to all New York-dwelling experts! I was last in New York City last October, and already I’m getting withdrawal symptoms, so have started thinking about my next visit. Each time I visit your wonderful city I like to explore a bit more. Over my last seven stays there I think I’ve more or less covered the whole of Manhattan from Cloisters to the Financial District. I really think I’ve seen just about every skyscraper (Chrysler and Woolworth still my favourites), interesting building (the Ford Foundation with its 12-story atrium is special), shop, attraction, area, museum, church (St John the Divine is the best!) and place of interest in every guidebook. I’ve done the “You’ve got Mail” tour of the Upper Westside, visited Roosevelt Island (just love that place), walked over Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, been numerous times on the Staten Island Ferry, visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, done the Circle Line trip and a helicopter trip. I’ve been to the Bronx Zoo and Coney Island, paid a visit to Jackson Heights and DUMBO (the latter was somewhat of a let-down). Now my question is – is there anything special/different/quirky that I’ve missed?? Any little corner not mentioned in any guidebook that’s worth visiting? I did have one thought for my next visit – City Island. I think I’ll do a day-trip there. But I’d really love any other suggestions anyone might have.

Hoping you don’t think I’m a nutcase! Cheers, Cindy

Question for the NYC experts

There are many other parts of Brooklyn besides DUMBO %26amp; Coney Island that might be interesting for you. Propect Park, the Brooklyn Museum, BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music).

Astoria in Queens, just over the 59th st. bridge is another up and coming area with some museums and ethnic restaurants as well as a design center. The Noguchi museum there is supposed to be great and there%26#39;s a shuttle bus on weekends from the Asia Society.

Since you seem to be interested in buildings and neighborhoods, you might have a look at the website for the Municpal Arts Society which gives excellent tours and might spark some more ideas

http://www.mas.org/Events/tours.cfm

Question for the NYC experts

Wow! anyone who included Jackson Hts on their NYC to do list is alright in my book. Have you gone to Forrest Hills yet? A woman I work with just made the big move from Manhattan out to Queens and is raving about how cute the area is. Even though I live next door and have driven through it, I have been yet to plan an afternoon of checking out the area, but have been meaning to.

Have you considered moving here?

Check out Smth Street and Court Street, in Carroll Gardens and Boeurum Hill. Also, Park Slope - 5th and 7th Ave. for shopping and eating, 6th, 8th and Prospect Park West for beautiful brownstones and mansions.

Read Jonathan Lethem%26#39;s ';Fortress of Sollitude'; and then visit these neighborhoods.

Consider a jaunt to Arthur Avenue in the Bronx for a taste of a terrific Little Italy-type area.

While you%26#39;re at Arthur Ave stop in at the NY Botanical Garden%26#39;s the Bronx%26#39;s great horticultural attraction.

Park slope/Prospect Park/ Brooklyn Museuma and the hipster neighborhood of williamsburg come to mind immediately.

Thank you SO much, everyone! That%26#39;s exactly the kind of info I was after. To ';Queensboulevard'; - funny you should ask that! Yes, I would actually love to spend a year in New York - it%26#39;s my dream to do this at some stage in the future. I don%26#39;t know why I love NY so much - to me, Manhattan is actually a living, breathing entity - I can hear its heartbeat and feel its pulse when I%26#39;m there. I always feel like throwing my arms round the whole city and giving it a big hug! Okay, so I am a bit of a nutcase where this city is concerned!

But thanks again - I%26#39;ve now got lots more to look forward to on my next visit. and as several of you suggest, I will venture more into the other boroughs as there%26#39;s plenty to see there if one just knows where to look! Cheers, Cindy

P.S. What do you think of the City Island idea?

ground zero

where is best viewing place for ground zero?

ground zero

Good question, A main reason for me going to NYC.

I await advice!

ground zero

Right up against the perimeter fence. Start at Church Street and Cortlandt Street (across from Centruy 21), and just walk around the entire thing.

Also, go up the footbridge on Liberty Street. Stop halfway through the overpass and turn around.

I believe there is another good view on the mezzanine of the American Express Building in the World Finanical Center, on West Street and Liberty. If you%26#39;re walking on the pedestrian/bike path on West Street, you%26#39;ll see it.

Check out these thorough websites about the area:

http://www.lowermanhattan.info/rebuild/

http://www.downtownny.com/InteractiveMap/#

http://www.imagineny.org/index.html

stucon and johno - you realize that the former site of the World Trade Center is just empty, barren ground, right? 4 years after that tragic day, there still is no memorial or anything else to mark the graves of those that died there.

I didn%26#39;t want you to think that you would be viewing something else.

I realise this mate, but it%26#39;s a major event in all of our lifetimes, that is beyond words and stunned the whole world into silence.

as much as its just an empty area, i feel its something that i have to visit.

It doesn%26#39;t matter, it%26#39;s still a must-visit place. There is no memorial but plaques on the fence worth viewing and it%26#39;s just . . . well, it%26#39;s hard to explain. Overwhelming is a not an adequate word. You will understand when you go.

Also, many people strongly recommend visiting St. Paul%26#39;s Church across the street. (My feet gave out when I went and I didn%26#39;t make it; will go next time.)

Absolutely stop into St Paul%26#39;s Chapel, and it is worth a visit to ground zero, as it was an event that changed the entire world.

who knows a good lunch spot near ground zero?

If one wants an extremely moving way to tour ground zero check out ';Soundwalks'; website.

It%26#39;s brilliant, poetic, and uncommonly poignant. You can listen to a sample (and other tours) as well.

These are audio tours, by the way.

Outstanding.

  • Just Back from stay in Village

We spent 4 great nights in the middle of it all on Bleeker St., just returning yesterday. Here are some of the highlights. . . On the spur of the moment we saw a comedy show at the Comedy Cellar -- my first time at a comedy club, but I loved it. Great comics (all unknown to me), then Chris Rock appeared as the surprise guest -- all for $10! Of course we ate ourselves silly, proving that you don%26#39;t have to spend much money to get fantastic food in New York. Some of our favorites were Pepe Rosso%26#39;s in SoHo, Hummous in the Village, Taj Mahal in Gramercy Park, Sea Thai in the East Village, Grimaldi%26#39;s in Brooklyn. We made a couple of trips to Russ and Daughter%26#39;s for incredible smoked fish, bagels and pickles (and a visit to Yonah Schimmel%26#39;s for knishes!). Joes, the Art of Coffee was worth the visit for great coffee in the West Village. We also had a great time in Chinatown, where we risked a foot and back rub for $40. It was worth at least twice that much, especially after all of the walking we did, and we vow to make that something we do each visit. We also took the 4 to Brooklyn, risked buying scalped tickets, and saw the Saturday Red Sox/Yankees game for less than face value. Afterwards, we had some slices in the neighborhood. Perfect! The weather was gorgeous, and New Yorkers just seem to be getting friendlier and happier each time I go. Why not -- it%26#39;s a fantastic city!!

Just Back from stay in Village

I couldn%26#39;t agree more with your food choices. Carmine%26#39;s, shmarmines.

Glad to hear the Comedy Cellar is still good. I%26#39;d heard it went downhill and just pressured people to drink more.

Just Back from stay in Village

Actually, we got the impression that we wouldn%26#39;t have needed to order the two drinks -- there was no pressure at all. The drinks were fairly cheap (4 or 5 bucks), so we spent a total of about $45 for two of us. An absolute bargain just about anywhere, I%26#39;d say!

Where did you stay on Bleeker? Sounds like a great trip.

We stayed at the Signature Suites, at 160 Bleeker. An absolutely fantastic location if you love that part of the City -- we%26#39;ll stay there again!

  • 30th Birthday Restaurant -something to remember

    Hi !

We are travelling to NY for first time in Nov and I would really like to find a great restaurant for my boyfriends birthday.

Ideal cuisine would be either italian or a steakhouse- mid range price - with a casual dress code - (we dont want to have to dress up in a jacket and tie!)

I would love to find somewhere which is a little bit different/special and somewhere to remember.

    Any ideas ????

30th Birthday Restaurant -something to remember

Those cuisines are not my speciality, but you can search by cuisine on

    www.menupages.com

The Italian places I like are:

    Puttanesca

    www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

Three of Cups (less expensive and more casual)

    www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

    Pepolino

    www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

30th Birthday Restaurant -something to remember

I suggest Biricchino on the corner of 29th St. and 8th Avenue.

    www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

Or, on the UWS, there%26#39;s Fiorello, Broadway between 63rd %26amp; 64th (and if you like foreign or independent movies, you can see one at the Lincoln Plaza Cinema on the same block).

    www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

One of the best Italian restaurants that I have found is called Mona Lisa%26#39;s. It is in Brooklyn, but well worth a cab ride.

I can%26#39;t vouch for the food, but Lucky Cheng%26#39;s is a place you%26#39;ll remember forever. All the waiters are in drag; I%26#39;ve never seen so many trannie trainees in one place. It%26#39;s at 24 First Avenue (between 1st and 2nd). Bring your camera, a healthy sense of humor, and watch out for the bathroom attendants.

I%26#39;d make a reservation at Balthazar (reserveations for dinner are mandatory and should be done well in advance)... The joint is jumping and a real NYC experience filled with celebs, locals, and visitors alike..

To keep within your budget might I suggest:

Ordering the Cote du Beouf for 2. It is a huge Rib steak and it comes with veggies and onion rings.

For dessert perhaps try the profiteroles (little cream puffs filled with ice cream and covered with a luscious chocolate sauce.)

Or for dessert you can walk just down the street and share a rice pudding at Rice to Riches... a really strange place that sells only rice pudding...in 100 varieties.

For more info on Balthazar check out menupages.com.

Cheapest way to get to Hotel QT from JFK

    Hi,

My boyfriend and i are going to NY in October and will be staying at the Hotel QT ( 125 west 45th St).

I%26#39;ve read some reviews and the cheapest seems to be the air train. We are arriving into NY at 9:40 pm on a Wednesday night.

Just wondering where i would go to catch the air train and how to transfer onto the subway to get the the hotel.

    Thanks.

Cheapest way to get to Hotel QT from JFK

I forgot to ask the travel time from JFK to the hotel by airtrain/subway. Thanks.

Cheapest way to get to Hotel QT from JFK

    www.panynj.gov/airtrain/from_jfk.html

    www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/submap.htm

    It%26#39;s very easy.

The AirTrain terminals are all connected to the terminals usually via tunnels and marked with arrows when you get off the plane. You want the Jamaica Train (Station D) Above each door when you board is an electronic sign board, be sure it says Jamaica Station / Station D.

At Jamaica follow the arrows (or the other people with suitcases) to the Manhattan bound E subway, it%26#39;s also very well marked with arrows. Take the E to 42nd St., QT is on 45th St b/n 5th and 6th.

Here is the website, with a map and pictures...

    http://www.panynj.gov/airtrain/

That picture on the home page is the transfer @ Jamaica. The trip should take you just under an hour. (They seem to be getting carried away with the JFK to Penn Station in 35 minutes claim.) Also you pay your fare at Jamaica for either direction.

    Italian Restaurants

Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions these past few months it has really helped me lots!

I am now looking for a restuarant for approx 40 people for an informal type meal the night b/4 the wedding so that everyone can get to know each other, i thought perhaps an italian restuarant would be the answer? Everyone is staying at the Salisbury so perhaps within walking distance or a short cab away would be ideal.

Suggestions for any fun/relaxed type of venues that can cater for this number of people would be much appreciated.

    Italian Restaurants

Trattoria Dell %26#39;Arte is right near the Salisbury. Their food is excellent and they have several private party rooms. I%26#39;ve attended a party there but it was about half the size and that room which is on the ground floor would be too small for your group. They have several upstairs.

The rest. is known for their antipasto. They make great thin crust pizza and their veal parmagiana is a pounded veal chop that hangs over the side of the plate! (deliciious!)

    trattoriadellarte.com

For something a bit more casual, there%26#39;s an Angelo%26#39;s Pizzeria with excellent coal oven pizza right near the Salisbury on 57th st. on the same block. Don%26#39;t know whether they have private rooms.

Shelly%26#39;s NY is a steak place right on the same block as the hotel and is another idea.

    shellysnewyork.com

    Congrats and good luck!!

    Italian Restaurants

I%26#39;d book Carmine%26#39;s. Their uptown private room would be great, or their midtown space has lots of space upstairs that would seat 40. www.carminesnyc.com

I like Trattoria del%26#39;Arte, but I don%26#39;t know if they%26#39;ve got a room that big. I%26#39;ve been several times to their wine room, but that%26#39;s pretty cramped even with 12.

I am now just two weeks away from visiting NYC - and am extremely excited! I%26#39;m a scrapbooker, therefore, I%26#39;m always thinking ahead to my photos. My question is: are there any times of the day or evening (sunset) that I would be trying to take pictures of the NY skyline from the Brooklyn Bridge that facing the sun would be an issue? Thanks for the help.

    Photography

    Annmay

Think this website might help you - http://www.sunrisesunset.com/ it was on this forum a little while back - it tells you when the sunrises and sets

Hope you enjoy the view at sunset/sunrise

    Cathy

    Photography

If you want great skyline pictures of manhattan I have 2 tips for you.

    1. Take the subway downtown to the Staten Island Ferry hop on the ferry and ride it to Staten Island and back. $2.00 .You%26#39;ll get great shots of the skyline looking north. A bonus is you%26#39;ll also get to see the statue of liberty.

    2. Take a NYwaterway ferry from 38th street to Weehawken or Hoboken,NJ $11 round trip. Once in NJ you will be able to take some great shots of the skyline looking east. When the sun is setting it will cast a beautiful orange glow on the city.

The Brooklyn Bridge is on the east side of Manhattan if you are facing Manhattan . Sunrise will be behind you . Sunset will be in front .

Annmay, the position of the sun at sunset when you%26#39;re standing on the Brooklyn Bridge is perfect for photography! If you look to your left you will see the sun setting almost directly behind the Statue of Liberty but so low in the sky that shooting into it is no problem. Look to your right and you will see the whole of midtown bathed in that fabulous orange glow that only comes at this time of day.

We were so lucky when we were there in February. I%26#39;ve posted some photos here: footcom.co.uk/nyc/鈥ndex.html for you to get an idea.

Enjoyed the photos, Nic. Did you use a filter at alll? The Statue of Liberty really looks well in the sol.

Thanks to all. I%26#39;ll try all suggestions and, Nic I have gone to your web site. Your pictures are great. I%26#39;m very excited about this trip and will post an itinerary soon.

Jaygee, no, didn%26#39;t use a filter. With it being February and the sun so low in the sky, the light was a very gentle orange (probably all the pollution in the air!). Using a digital camera also means you can experiment a bit and see immediately what effect you%26#39;re having.

    How long will it take?

Will be landing at JFK in rush hour (5pm ish) and need to %26#39;check in%26#39; at Southgate Tower Hotel ASAP to make a knicks game!

How long will in take me (with luggage!) to get from JFK to Penn Station by taking the Airtrain to Jamaica Station then a connecting train to Penn Station?

    Thanks

    How long will it take?

In this case rush hour will work in your favor. There are LIRR trains (Long Island Railroad) every 10-15 minutes out of Jamaica. Those will get you to Penn Station in about 20 minutes. Provided you have no runway delays, or baggage claim hassles, you%26#39;ll arrive at Penn Station in under an hour.

  • broadway prices???

It looks like several of the broadway discounts end in early October. Are the chances of getting reduced priced tickets pretty slim from then on?

Shows we are considering: Avenue Q, Rent, Lion King... Any other suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

(We are trying to decide if we should wait it out or go ahead and pay full price now.)

    Thanks

    broadway prices???

Rent is always available on discount so I%26#39;d wait on that. The others are usually NOT available with discount anyway so paying full price may be your best bet.

    broadway prices???

I should have added it also depends on when you%26#39;re coming. Often discounts are not good for Sat. night performances. If you%26#39;re coming over a holiday that makes things harder. I%26#39;d still wait for a discount on Rent whether through a code or at the TKTS booth but the others are harder and may be worth paying full price.

Oct 7-9 is Columbus Day weekend and many discounts are blacked out those days as well

you%26#39;ll have to pay full price for Lion King

    www.seasonofsavings.com

I%26#39;m not sure how many of you there are, but both Rent and Avenue Q sell some day of the show tickets for $20. Rent%26#39;s are in the first two rows. The sell them through a lotto system. Check out their website or call the box office for more info, as I am not sure of the time they hold the drawing - it%26#39;s a few hours before the performance, but you put your name into a hat and they pick names. Each person gets two tickets max. It%26#39;s surprisingly easy, as it depends on how many people show up.

Thank you for the replies. Given your advice, I think we will go ahead and purchase Avenue Q tickets now. I like the lottery ida for Rent.

    Your help is really appreciated.

    Roberto Vianni Shoes?

Can you buy these in New York or is it just Europe? I have a great pair of cumfy trainer style shoes I used 3 years ago on our last trip to NY. They are still in not bad condition but would like another pair. Rather than buy them here before I travel I thought I%26#39;d get them there if that%26#39;s possible.

Sounds like a European thing....I%26#39;ve never seen Roberto Vianni in New York.

    Young Couple--First Time in NYC

    Hi All,

I%26#39;ve been hanging around reading these forums for the past couple months and just wanted to start off by saying thanks to all the great information and posts. So, here%26#39;s the story: My girlfriend and I (22 %26amp; 24) are heading to NYC for valentines day, which will be our first trip. We have most everything set up (thanks to all the info on the boards!), but I still have a few questions. First, I wanted to take her to mass on sunday at st. patricks. Not being catholic, I have no idea what%26#39;s appropriate to wear. I know that sounds a bit silly, but we%26#39;re flying in that morning and probably won%26#39;t have access to shower/hotel room yet, so I wanted to make sure that we felt comfortable wearing whatever we traveled in. Next, I wanted to take her somewhere to here Frank Sinatra style tunes with some dancing. Not to offend anyone here, but is there a place that perhaps we wouldn%26#39;t feel like everyone kids being in there that has that kind of atmosphere?? Thanks again for everyones help and contributions to this forum...

    Young Couple--First Time in NYC

Oh, I thought of another question...We%26#39;re seeing a show Monday night at 8:00 with a running time of 2 1/2 hours. I was thinking of going out for a late meal and drinks. Is this too late to eat or is this normal for the after theater crowd.

(I should apologize for the grammar in the first post, I was typing fast!)

    Thanks again,

    Minus

    Young Couple--First Time in NYC

Well I can answer 2 of your 3 questions on both postings....

St. Patty%26#39;s......anything goes! Tourist have access during services (although no pics during that time) so you see folks dressed in everything. Besides, it%26#39;s the fact that you%26#39;re there that%26#39;s important, not what you%26#39;re wearing. Make sure to bring your camera to take pics after mass...it%26#39;s a beautiful cathedral.

Dining out after a show is perfectly normal...just know ahead of time what restaurants are close to your theatre or final destination and their hours of business. Menupages.com is a great resource for planning.

I would suggest wearing something comfortable but nice on the plane so you can transition to St. Patricks without changing. Doesn%26#39;t need to be fancy, but probably shouldn%26#39;t be jeans and a parka either. I can%26#39;t help you with the dancing except for the Rainbow Room. It%26#39;s very cool with Frank Sinatra sounds, incredible view and art deco atmosphere. But it is also very spendy and requires booking in advance. Another option would be a cabaret. I think the Algonquin hotel has the best. As for the dining question, you can dine before the show or after the show, depending on your collective tummy requirements. Or you can do both. New York will easily provide you with many options. Have fun with your Valentine!

There are all kinds of late-night dining options from delis to more posh places like Onieal%26#39;s in the village to Balthazar.

You might really enjoy the festive, warm, and consumately welcoming atmosphere at Chez Josephine on 42nd between Eighth and Ninth--a short from many theaters.

A personal favorite of mine is La Lanterna di Vittorio in the village--a short cab ride. It%26#39;s causal, very affordable, and romantic with fireplaces.

The first thing that comes to mind when you say ';Sinatra-like'; is Bobby Short at the World-famous Carlyle.

The next thing is cabaret. I%26#39;d call around to places like ';Don%26#39;t Tell Mama'; and find out whose performing when you%26#39;re in town and seeif anyone fits the bill.

For dancing to that sort of music there%26#39;s the Rainbow Room.

Oh, yes. For a terrific balladeer check out Michael Feinstein who has his own place. He does lots of Gershwin and Cole Porter and is clearly one of the best guys doing this kind of music in the city.

I%26#39;ll try to find some links.

Thanks for the responses from everyone! Any other music or dancing ideas? Also, does any local NYers%26#39;, or anyone else for that matter, know of any other smaller romantic bars that might be good? I%26#39;ve checked out citysearch for some ideas, but just thought I%26#39;d ask here as well.

    Thanks,

  • How much time for pre-theatre dining?

We have tickets to Wicked on September 28. The show starts at 8 p.m. We%26#39;d like to have a nice pre-theatre dining experience...don%26#39;t want to be rushed, etc. What time should we make reservations for? (assuming the restaurant we go to isn%26#39;t far from the theatre)

    TIA!

How much time for pre-theatre dining?

Reserve your table for 6:00. That%26#39;ll give you plenty of time to relax and still get out in time.

    Comfort Inn Midtown: Little Brazil

Where to eat? I will be in NYC staying at the Comfort Inn on a Sunday nigh before a meeting on Monday. I want to go somewhere nice, convenient and where I will be comfortable eating alone

    Comfort Inn Midtown: Little Brazil

You would be comfortable and welcome alone in any restaurant. Via Brasil is on the same block I believe and gets good reviews and is not pricey. Cafe Un Deux Trois for French is another option a few blocks away. Trattoria Trecolori is Italian, also nearby. Look for details and reviews on

    menupages.com

    Comfort Inn Midtown: Little Brazil

    Thanks for the info!

I can highly recommend the Via Brasil, had a very good meal there and the prices was indeed not to bad.

Although there were 2 of us, this place seems perfectly ok for a single traveler.

We also stayed at the comfort inn midtown.

We had a nice meal at John`s shanghai wich is across the street from the hotel.

It was a casual chinese place and an ideal restaurant to eat alone.

  • University Club???

A friend of mine has suggested that we can stay at the University Club on our visit to NY. Has anyone heard of this place?

    University Club???

The only University Club I know is the one on the corner of Fifth Avenue, in the low to mid 50s. It%26#39;s a private club. Many of these clubs have accommodations for overnight stays by members or their guests.

    University Club???

Although one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture in the city, I believe it%26#39;s a private club.

Here%26#39;s a web site about the building www.wirednewyork.com/forum/showthread.php鈥?/a>

How did your friend get in or know about it?

It%26#39;s a beautiful building just off Fifth ave. If your friend is a member you can stay. I%26#39;ve never seen the rooms but have eaten there (although at the time they weren%26#39;t too keen on having women...).

    greatbuildings.com/buildings/University_Club鈥?/a>

There are a number of private clubs around the city that have rooms for members and their guests including the Metropolitan Club, the Harvard Club, the NY Yacht Club, Harmonie, Union League, Union, Colony, Lotos, Players, Century and more.

    Anything going on Oct. 23-26?

Is there anything particular going on in the city Oct. 23-26th. The prices seem to be more expensive and availability limited.

    Just curious. Thanks.

    Anything going on Oct. 23-26?

It is called Murphy%26#39;s Law. Everyone conspired against you, they are reserving rooms in blocks, just to make you pay more. Mind you, they never intend to use those rooms, they just want you not to use them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I got carried away. To my knowledge nothing is going on, but then again I so not follow the papers on that far in the future events.

Try a different website or try to book closer to the date.

    Anything going on Oct. 23-26?

broadwaynyc put it well in a recent post with a similar question:

    ';...what is ';going on'; is the very favorable exchange rates for the Euro versus the US dollar hence the influx of tourists resulting in very high hotel occupancy and high room rates';

I had a feeling the fates were against me. I just the same reason we didn%26#39;t go to Europe in March. I guess I%26#39;ll pay one way or the other. Milford Plaza here I come. Thanks for your help.

    Marthaps,

I will try to make a favorable exchange rate to your Georgian Dollar vs New York Dollar.

Have fun, Milford Plaza is in the middle of the Times Square, the most fun place to stay! Enjoy it.

BTY we went to Paris in August and EU was $1.22, better then $1.35 in March and we still paid a fortune, but had a great time.

I%26#39;ll be looking for that exchange rate! I%26#39;ve stayed there 2 times and you really can%26#39;t beat it for the location and price.

I%26#39;ve learned if you wait for the perfect time it never comes, exchange rate or not!

  • TRavelling alone, any advice on fair priced accomodation?

Im stuck, cant find a single hotel that looks decent and worth the cost. Im travelling to NY on 21st Oct for 5 nights and would like to stay in a central location. I had alook at Milford PLaza, which will cost around $1172 all up, is this reasonable?

TRavelling alone, any advice on fair priced accomodation?

Try the following, the Milford Plaza is not the greatest:

    Hotel QT

    Hotel 41

    The Belvedere

    Travel Inn

    Portland Square

These are in the Times Square area.

Upper West Side hotels that are recommended:

    Beacon

    Bellecaire

    Newton

    Jacks B %26amp; B

The Affinia hotels are also well revieved, with various NYC locations...www.afinia.com

TRavelling alone, any advice on fair priced accomodation?

    Sorry, www.affinia.com

Tatjana, do you definitely need a hotel? There are other types of accommodations that price out just as well, if not better than the hotel prices you listed.

Try a search on this forum for ';vacation apartments';. You%26#39;ll find lots of links and recommendations.

Prices are just out of sight this fall. You don%26#39;t mention a budget. I wouldn%26#39;t stay at the Milford Plaza. Locals refer to it as the Mildew Plaza. It%26#39;s certainly not worth that price. The Stanford and the Herald Square are 2 budget places near Penn Station that are cheap and cheerful, but not where I%26#39;d choose to be (safe but not very attractive area).

If you can handle $232/night plus tax, the Salisbury shows availability for that price for a total of $1,160 (PLUS tax) on quikbook.com You can check the hotel%26#39;s own website to see if you can get the same price through them (nycsalisbury.com). This appears to be for a regular room. A one bedroom suite is $267/night, also on quikbook.

Radio City Apartments (radiocityapartments.com) is another I%26#39;d try.

You could try bidding on Priceline but I don%26#39;t know how much success you%26#39;d have. If you don%26#39;t know the ropes, go to biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com for advice.

Your other option is to consider a hosted apartment (staying in someone%26#39;s apt with your own bedroom and bath). This may sound a bit scarey but we%26#39;ve had several posters here rave about a service

    citylightsnewyork.com

Thanks a mill! scks that so many places mentioned on this forum are booked out over that weekend..

Mixed reviews on here, so I don%26#39;t know, but how about the Off Soho Suites? $1262 all in. www.hotelbook.com

I%26#39;d be really appreciative if anyone can help! email: michaellapage@yahoo.com

    Work in New York

not necessarily a green card but you do need some sort of legal document that allows you to work in the USA

    www.uscis.gov

There probably are places which employ people and pay cash under the table, but we aren%26#39;t really at liberty to discuss anything illegal here.

I%26#39;m not trying to out any undocumented workers here in NYC - in fact I welcome them all with open arms. But...there are numerous bars and restaurants in town who will gladly give you employment, particularly if you have a little expereince, leaving those more troublesome doumentation questions to other employers.

    Pizza on Manhattan

Staying in Times Square. Hoping to get to Little Italy.

Where is a good place for NYC pizza?

    Pizza on Manhattan

Little Italy does not have the best pizza nor for that matter the best Italian food in NYC. For good pizza near Times Square go to John%26#39;s Pizzeria 20 W 44 Street near 8th Avenue. Look at previous posts on this site for many other recommendations.

    Pizza on Manhattan

    Ray%26#39;s Pizza is ready good.

    http://raysfamouspizza.com/

A matter of fact Little Italy has nothing of interest. Please it is no longer authentic or interesting, just overpriced tourist trap restaurants. What a great city and visiting Little Italy would be wasting time you could spend in other areas of NYC. Lombardi%26#39;s has great pizza, it%26#39;s on spring street. Brooklyn has the best pizza though, Difara%26#39;s, Grimaldi%26#39;s, Spumoni Gardens and many more.

Midnight girl, please spend a minute and do a search on this board for pizza. There have been many many threads with a lot of suggestions. Some quite recent.

i%26#39;m not crazy about pizza, but we had pizza at times square at ray%26#39;s pizza and it was best ever!!! i ate whole slice, my boyfriend too, and than i got another one. we really recommend this place!

    John%26#39;s in the Village.

    Patsy%26#39;s (uptown).

    What about Lombardi%26#39;s?

Went to John%26#39;s in the village and didn%26#39;t think much of it. Tried Grimaldis just over the Brooklyn bridge and thought it was the best we%26#39;d ever tasted!

    I%26#39;ll second Lombardi%26#39;s Queens

Our Scottish friend from Edinburgh sure knows pizza - Grimald%26#39;is in Brooklyn is the place to go! - plus you get the Brooklyn Bridge and the best views of Manhattan.

Search this forum for San Genarro feast (or festival). That%26#39;s one of the only reason to go to Little Italy. It%26#39;s next week.

I%26#39;m looking for some great shops to visit while in NYC. Nothing on Madison AVE or anything extremely well known, ie. Barney%26#39;s, Bloomingdales, etc.

I love vintage, as well, discount designer places would be great!

Also, does anyone know where What Comes Around Goes Around is located?? I hear its this great vintage shop, anyone ever been?

    Shopping, Shopping, Shopping!

What Goes Around... is on West Broadway in Soho. (351 W. Broadway) It%26#39;s pretty decent, kind of expensive because of it%26#39;s reputation for celebrity clientele. They do have good stuff though.

The primo nieghborhood for Vintage is the East Village and NoLita, there is a store called Resurrection on Mott (217 Mott St.), which is the very similiar to What Goes Around. Also check out Tokio 7 (7th St b/n 2nd and 3rd) for great designer consigment.

My favorite consignment shop in the city is a place called Fisch for the Hip. (153 W. 18th just off 7th ave.) It%26#39;s a little pricey, as they only accept merchandise in absolutely pristine condition. They have a really awesome spectrum of merchandise, you never know what you can score there.

    Shopping, Shopping, Shopping!

Pylones 69 Spring St. Store from Paris that sells funky designed toys and housewares.

Beard Papa%26#39;s 740 Broadway at Astor Place - okay, not a store but a yummy cream puff stand from Japan.

Il Papiro 1021 Lexington Ave Wonderful handmade papers from Italy. Unique cards, gift sets, picture frames.

Find Outlet 361 W. 17th - designer clothes on consignment. Small store but the selection is pretty good and changes often

    Beacon%26#39;s Closet - in Williamsburg 88 N. 11th St. Brooklyn

Fishes Eddy for kitchen items (plates, glasses, old airline silverware) 889 Broadway at 19th St

Fishes Eddy also has a location in Brooklyn (Montague St) which takes up a lot of my spare cash (just love that funky glassware!)

If you%26#39;re searching for said store, make sure you spell it correctly:

Fishs Eddy (no ';e'; in Fishs).

See namesake town in upstate New York (always thought the highway dept. misspelled the sign.):

It%26#39;s a small hamlet within the Town of Hancock. Appropriately, there%26#39;s great fly fishing there.

  • Best way from Penn Station to Upper West Side?

    Help!

I%26#39;ve got to go to NYC in two day and want to find the best way to get from Penn Station to 77th and Broadway area.

Is subway the best? If so, what line(s)?

I%26#39;ll try to pick up a guidebook, but this has always been a helpful site, so I thought I%26#39;d try here first.

    TIA

    Patrick

Best way from Penn Station to Upper West Side?

If you%26#39;re not carrying a lot of luggage, you can easily take the Uptown 1 train to 79th and Broadway (just walk to blocks south when you get upstairs).

Best way from Penn Station to Upper West Side?

If you have luggage, take a taxi. It%26#39;s easy to get one at Penn Station and if you have more than one person it will not cost you that much more than the subway. If you have little or no luggage, take the subway as indicated by prior poster.

I agree, #1 train to 79th %26amp; Broadway is definitely the best way -no traffic to worry about-and the traffic is really bad during rush hours.

    1. what is best subway route to keep walking to minimum for going from Grand Central to intersection of Bleecker Street and Sixth Ave?

    2. what is name/location of subway station on 110th east of Cathedral of St. John (in order to catch a train north to yankees stadium) ?

    3. what is best subway route to keep walking to minimum for going from Rockefellar Center to ESPN Zone ( Broadway %26amp; 42nd)

    thanks

    quick help with subway question

    1. Take the 6 from GCS south to the Bleeker St exit and walk east to Sixth. Not too far.

    2. The Station is called Cathedral Parkway, but you need to go much further to go to Yankee Stadium. They have been changing things up with the B/d lines going to Yankee Stadium, esp. on weekends vs weekdays. Just take a B or D to 125th and listen to announcements or follow the huge crowd.

    3. You could take the B/D or F/V from Rock Center south to 42nd and 6th and walk over one avenue to the ESPN Zone. However, that would be extremely lazy since it%26#39;s one quick stop. I suggest you just walk the distance. It%26#39;s not far at all.

I agree, but feel strangely compelled to offer this alternative:

    1. Take the 7 train at Grand Central Station one stop (twoards Times Square, not to Queens) to FIFTH AVE.

Walk through the corridor to the B,D,F,V. Yes it is long, but contains a beauiful piece of subway art.

    http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/artwork?62

Trasnfer to the F,B,D,V trains going downtown to West 4th Street. Stay in front of train, exit W. 3rd St. Walk one block south.

Check out this website for some help

If you take the #6 from GCS to the Bleecker Street exit, you must go WEST, about 8-9 blocks before you reach 6th Avenue. The #6 at Bleecker drops you off at Lafayette Street.

Saturdays, ongoing. Talented vocalist Cary Hoffman celebrates the music of Sinatra with accompaniment from Stan Rubin%26#39;s eleven-piece orchestra.

Carnegie Club, 156 W. 56th St., nr. Seventh Ave. (212-957-9676).

    There are a trio of hotel ';rooms'; (meaning cabaret rooms) that have various singers who generally do the old standards. The Oak Room at the Agonquin hotel, Feinstein%26#39;s at the Regency Hotel and Cafe Carlyle at the Carlyle. At the end of the month Elaine Stritch will be appearing at the Carlyle (she is know for doing ';Here%26#39;s to the Ladies Who Lunch'; from the show Company). These places tend to be very pricey. Most serve adequate but pricey food but it does feel very ';New York.';

I think some of the previous ideas you got (like Swing and the cabaret show) sound like great fun.

The Rainbow Room is exactly as you describe with awesome views but you will definitely be the youngest ones there.

Pay 拢460 for a boring flight to New York, or pay 拢85 less and have the added experience of a dip in the Blue Lagoon in the middle of winter. No contest for me - Iceland all the time. In fact, forget New York and stop in Reykavik.

Icelandair or Continental - from UK

You don%26#39;t say which airport you are flying from, but www.dialaflight.co.uk have flights from 拢262 inc taxes from most Scottish airports with KLM.

We flew to Orlando last year with Icelandair via Reykjavik from Glasgow.

We originally booked with KLM via Amsterdam as it was cheaper but the plane broke down at Glasgow so they offered us the flight via Iceland. Although the stopover is for 4 hours it didn%26#39;t add any extra time to our journey but it might with yours as your other flight is direct.

We have flown with various airlines to the US and didn%26#39;t find Icelandair any better or any worse than the others, but did enjoy the trip to the Blue Lagoon.

We are flying out from Glasgow with Continental in 2 days time so I%26#39;ll let you know what it%26#39;s like when we get home.

I%26#39;m a bit worried as it is only a 757 they are using- 3 aisle 3 configuration so it won%26#39;t be very roomy. but we may be pleasantly surprised

    babymac,

We fly from Edinburgh with Continental on 24th Sept, our first trip with them. After reading people%26#39;s doubts on the forum I spoke to a couple of friends who have flown with them before. They both said the flights were fine, no problems. We have always flown across the Atlantic in larger planes, usually BA, so was also a bit concerned. Hopefully it%26#39;ll all be ok and we won%26#39;t be disappointed. It%26#39;ll be good to hear how you get on. Have a great holiday.

    Jackie (Penicuik)

The continental planes from edinburgh and glasgow are on the small side compared to others..but you will be fine babymac, the stewards on the plane work pretty flat out for most of the trip ,so just don%26#39;t get stuck behind them on your way back from the toilet !! i think you will be pleasantly surprised with them !! my lady who is of average build had no problems ..i did only because i%26#39;m quite tall !! hope you have a great time ..look forward to hearing all about it ..take care .

Thanks guys- I%26#39;m only 5 foot 2 so leg room is never much of a problem for me!!!

My problem now is that my 4 year old is running a fever and is pretty poorly and I don%26#39;t know whether I%26#39;ll now be able to go.

I%26#39;ll be gutted if I have to cancel but you just want your Mum when you%26#39;re not well.

Hopefully it%26#39;ll only be a 24 hour thing- he was ill yesterday and he%26#39;s still in bed so he might sleep it off- fingers crossed!

    Audrey

Sorry to hear that your young lad is not to well just now babymac ...i do hope he gets well in time for you to go to NYC ..it would be a shame for you after all the preparations you%26#39;ve no doubt made !! but family always comes first so they say !!

A word of warning for the easily bored re - the Continental flight from Edinburgh. Take plenty of reading matter/a CD player/Ipod - you don%26#39;t get individual tv screens on this flight just the screens that come down from overhead so basically you%26#39;re stuck with the film thats showing. If its not your cup of tea your%26#39;re stuck (FYI I fall into the easily bored category!!!)

We have a really good range of Asian (Chinese/Thai/Malaysian) and Indian restaurants in New Zealand - can anyone recommend some good (and cheap!) restaurants in NY that aren%26#39;t Asian or European?

Some moderately priced restaurants in my neighborhood that fit your criteria:

Sipan 702 Amsterdam 94 Street 212-665-9929-Peruvian-very good food, nice atmosphere, quite during the week, a little noisier on weekends.

Pampa 768 Amsterdam 97/98 Streets 212-865-2929 good grilled Argentinean steak. Crowded. No credit cards.

    These are all cheap cheap...

Cuban: Cafe con Leche 424 Amsterdam Ave (at 80th St)

Mexican: The Great Burrito 405 Amsterdam Ave (right across the street!)

Middle Eastern / Israeli (kosher): http://hoomoos.com (Soho)

For falafel (Middle Eastern or Israeli?), I%26#39;d go with Mamoun%26#39;s, Moustache or Olive Tree, all in the Village.

I%26#39;d also try Turkish food. (Bereket on Houston St.) I know Dervish is supposed to be great, but too expensive for me, never been. Order a tajine.

Check out the tried and true Menupages.com

    http://www.menupages.com/index.asp

You can search by cuisine and neighborhood, and print out their menus.

For instance, here%26#39;s a list of Jamaican and Carribean food (has interesting similarities to Southeast Asian, sadly due to colonialism/slave trade.) Negril is a favorite.:

For something more American, try Soul Food or Southern cooking. I like Acme, Pink Tea Cup and Orchid.

Two good Brazilian restaurants are Via Brazil and Emporium Brasil, both on W. 46th between 5th and 6th. Not exactly cheap, but still fairly moderate.

Dervish is excellent, with a $20.00 prix fixed that is well worth it, and the regular prices are relatively inexpensive.

Uncle Nicks, on 9th Avenue in Hell%26#39;s Kitchen, is good.

For authentic Jewish Deli, try 2nd Avenue Deli in the East Village, or Ben%26#39;s in the Garment District.

Good, cheap polish food, Little Poland in the East Village, or Veselka, in the East Village, also.

You can check menus, prices %26amp; locations at www.menupages.com

Thanks for the info re Dervish, NYCgirl. I must%26#39;ve been thinking of some other place.

For good, reasonably priced Ethiopian food, try Queen of Sheba on 10th Avenue and 46th Street. Also on 10th Avenue, right around there, is a good, cheap Mexican restaurant called Tulcingo del Valle. Not much to look at, but clean and friendly.

You might also want to visit www.menupages.com, which sorts Manhattan (not other boroughs) restaurants by cuisine and other factors (e.g., neighborhood, price).

If you find Afghani food a bit unusual, try Khyber Pass...

    Antique musical instruments, throw pillows and oriental rugs fill this small, cozy and inexpensive East Village Afghan restaurant. The air is filled with spices, and the exotic destination and dining experience is memorable. Try their Pamir Sabzu - a delicious salad of mint, watercress and feta cheese. Try entrees like Quorma Sabz (lamb and scallions saut茅ed with spinach and coriander), or chopped beef patties with basmati rice and lots of hot spices. Or sample the spicy saut茅 of spinach and lamb, homemade noodles topped with mildly spiced meat and lentils, or eggplant slices served over a layer of mint yogurt. Top your meal off with Turkish coffee and their outsatnding Baklava. Entrees range in price from $9.50-$13.95. The best Afghani food in the city. Very authentic, very novel, very tasty.';

Wow, thank you all for your recommendations. There is enough here to keep myself and my husband very full!

is it really a law?can we break it?

We%26#39;re now thinking about trying to visit during Christmastime. We just got back last Monday, and want to return again soon. We stayed at the Affinia 50. We got the Jr. Suite which had two queen beds and a sleeper sofa. This easily sleeps 5, but when I tried to book it for 5, they said New York law won%26#39;t allow 5. We are 3 adult women, a 20 year old and an 11 year old. They offered us a 2 bedroom suite for $739 PER NIGHT. Can%26#39;t afford that. Do you think we could sneak 5 in?

is it really a law?can we break it?

look at embassy suites , sleeps 6 at half the price!!

is it really a law?can we break it?

I stayed at the Embassy last year ..i just wanted to stay in a different location for a change..fab hotel you laso get a free buffet hot breakfat %26amp; there is also a free drinks reception each night between 5-7 fab hotel and we really enjoyed the location..

We were not able to book for 5 people either online at Doubletree Suites ....but then just calledand made reservations over the phone. We also hada 2 queens and a pull-out sofa. No Problem. Just tell them 4 people then...they willnever know. Or try Doubletree suites...great location.

Actually, if you%26#39;re caught you can be charged with ';Theft of Services'; which in New York, depending on the circumstances, can be either a violation or a misdemeanor.

Some unsolicited advice: better to do a little more research, find two rooms, and sleep with a clear conscience.

    I agree with Wingman.

the maid who cleans up the room will know

if the hotel management is being especially diligent about things like this, you could be hit up with more fees

And the people in the room next door or below you will probably know, too, because they have to listen to you taking showers, flushing the toilet and tripping over each other.

There is SO much security in hotels these days it would be foolish to assume no one is watching. I suppose the hotel could wink at it but there are regs for multi-resident dwellings in N.Y.C and I%26#39;m betting no hotel would want to risk a fine or any other penalties.

i would not worry about that. we always do it, just u have to be smart about it. dont be messy, so maid will not find out. u could sneak there ;)

It may be a fire code/insurance problem. Some hotels I think in an effort to hold down insurance costs can only accomdodate 4 to a room. Unless you%26#39;ve already SPOKEN to someone, I would phone and ask the question to a manager. Tell him/her what you just told us (I was just there etc.)

What a great deal! I have some friends in a 1 bedroom share in a five-story walk-up who would love to talk to you.

    Not Having Much Luck :-)

Hi Everyone, Have been quiet for a while but still been on reading and watching every day, as you do. I managed to go on to open table and get booked for the River Cafe for New Years Eve, was really pleased with myself then booked Mama Mia for Christmas Day show, really organised. So I got an e.mail from River Cafe a few weeks later to say that my reservation had been cancelled, so i rang River Cafe, apparently open table should not have booked it for New Year as they did not know what they were doing yet. The guy was very helpful told me to ring back again in November. I have just had an e.mail from Broadway.com to say the producers have decided not to run the show on December 25th. Oh dear I am back to the beginning :-) Any suggestions from anyone greatly appreciated.

    Not Having Much Luck :-)

Call restaurants and hotels direct for best price and firm reservations. As for shows, check out others you might like on Playbill.com. I know your pain, had tickets, took the cab, landed at the theater and found a paper sign that said that Thoroughly Modern Millie had closed the previous night. Was I cranky for a spell? Definitely! Until I got ticket refunds for the shpw. Work through a travel agent that will guarantee a return on your ticket price if the show cancels.

    Not Having Much Luck :-)

It might be a bit early to book places for New Year%26#39;s dinner right now. Definitely keep checking on opentable.com. And be persistent with the River Cafe. It sounds like they aren%26#39;t saying no...they just aren%26#39;t saying yes.

Thanks for the answers guys. Its not so bad for me then mamababoo at least I got told three months in advance, poor you that would have been very frustrating to say the least. Will keep trying for River Cafe then Voyagereuse I will call again in November.

Where to get a good chilli dog?

or chilli dawg as they say in the films - we went to NY in Dec )03 and this is one of the many experiences we missed!

Where to get a good chilli dog?

If you must get a real hot dog, go to any Gray%26#39;s Papaya or Papaya King. (multiple locations.) Cheap enough to try both and post your assessment here.

I believe they offer relish, onions, pickles, sauerkraut. Don%26#39;t know about chilly.

Those movies about NYC, gotta love %26#39;em. (Oy.)

Where to get a good chilli dog?

    It has to be F%26amp;B%26#39;s. They%26#39;ve two locations;

    269 W 23rd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues and

150 E 52nd Street between between Lexington and 3rd Avenue.

I had the Chilli dawg and the Great Dane. They have about 15 different types of Hot Dog. Had the other half not protested I%26#39;d have ate their every night ;-)

They serve it on it%26#39;s own or as a meal. Fries or salad plus drink. They have a stack of european beers there too. The salads are excellent.

    Would recommend this place. www.gudtfood.com

    Dawgs on park is super-cute!

    http://dawgsonpark.com/

It%26#39;s a bit off the beaten track for most tourists, but Schnack in Red Hook is the best I%26#39;ve ever had in the city. Simply amazing and cheap too. If you%26#39;re over in the Smith/Court St. area it%26#39;s worth the extra few blocks walk - also right around the corner is Alma - great mexican with a wonderful view of the city skyline.

Dawgs on Park looks very cute ;)

    Hotel River View

Has anyone heard of this one?

    http://hotelriverview.com

Not a very central location, but is a cool area, and very cheap.

    Hotel River View

The name%26#39;s a good one but their website rather lets them down. If I ran a hotel in NYC, I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d use AOL to host my site! None of the picture links are working either.

My guess is it%26#39;s more hostel than hotel (given the ';House Rules';)!

It would be interesting to know if anyone has stayed there.

    Hotel River View

    Hey, they%26#39;re keeping costs down!

That%26#39;s not my experience of using AOL!

    House Rules:

Linen is exchanged clean for dirty every Wednesday from 9:00AM to 8:00PM.

The reception desk in the main lobby will look after your needs

So if you check in on Thursday tough!! ;-)

yes, i used to live there for 2months.

well, its more like hostel, but definetly is the cheapest hotel in nyc with great location.

u have to ask yourself, if u want nice accomodation, or more budget room just for sleep in.

rooms r small:, u share showers(dirty, wear flipflops)

but the price is great, i used to live there when i was looking for apart. if u r not scared of weird people, u can stay there. i think city has a lot to offer, than stay in room to watch tv.

other cheap place, but way better is habitat hotel in midtown, 50st. they charge 80$ and more, but rooms r way nicer. that looks like hotel.

really depends what u want and can handle it ;)

    thanks cutcat!

hm, and anyway, J.Lo is renting apart just 2doors away, that corner building. but her payment is much higher ;)))

    good luck!

Like I said, it is a very cool neighborhood. Just never knew anyone who stayed here before.

  • Cigar help

    Hi

I posted this a while back but to no avail.....my dad loves cigars and in particular smokes Dutch Masters which are really expensive here. He has asked me to pick him some up when I%26#39;m in NY - last time I was there the only place I could find them was at the pharmacy opposite the Hotel Newton. This time I%26#39;m staying in Greenwich and dont really want to have to trek up there unless necessary. Can anyone tell me if they%26#39;re available elsewhere?

    Thanks

Fantastic Cigars (for Dad) from the pharmacy opp hotel i%26#39;m staying in. Don%26#39;t suppose you noticed if they sold other brands.

    Thanks for your post

    Cathy

    Cigar help

I remember seeing a tobacconist on the corner of 5th Ave and 42nd St ( Nat Sherman I think it was called). They seemed to have a huge display of cigars, I only remember as my dad was fond of a good one too!

Cathy - they had a fair few of the most common brands and in boxes of 50 too which is good for bringing home.

Daisiegee - thanks I will make a note of it and wander that way whilst I%26#39;m there :)

Louise, here%26#39;s a list from NY Magazine.

    nymetro.com/search/stores_search.htm鈥?/a>

The big 3 are Dunhill, Davidoff (both fancy) and Nat Sherman. They%26#39;re all midtown. OK Cigars sounds like a fun place and is in Soho I think which would be closer to the village. Remind me where you%26#39;re staying in the village?

We%26#39;re staying at West Eleventh between W4 and Bleecker. It doesn%26#39;t have to be on the doorstep as we%26#39;ll be walking around quite a bit this time I just thought if I got some names of places I could check them out before trapsing up to 94th! Thanks for that web link - I%26#39;m just having a look now :)

For the best selection of cigars in midtown, check JR Cigar at 562 Fifth Avenue corner of 46th Street.

They have two floors full of fine product to choose from and can recommend a cigar for almost any taste. Dutch Masters are an old standby - unfortunately for their fans, not readily available these days.

I%26#39;m sure the experts at JR can recommend a suitable substitute that your father will enjoy.

Ednoo - thanks for that - I was just looking on their website when I read your recommendation! Trust my dad to like a brand that%26#39;s going out of date!

Well I emailed the Ok Cigar shop but they don%26#39;t stock them. Here%26#39;s what the guy said:-

    So sorry, we do not stock them. We are in a ';high-end';

area, SoHo, and Dutch Masters are machine-made,

with stuff in them other than just tobacco (nobody

seems to know just what that stuff is).

    It%26#39;s a little strange...we get a LOT of requests

for these types of low-end, American-made cigars

from older gents from the UK. I%26#39;m afraid the U.S.

companies went in to the UK back in the %26#39;50%26#39;s and

did quite a sales job! Anyway, your best bet is still

a pharmacy, or maybe a lower-end tobacconist (they

usually sell magazines and lottery tickets and

    canned beverages, etc.).

Thanks for the email and stop by and say hi anyway.

Trust my dad to like cheap rubbish! woner what the %26#39;other%26#39; stuff in them is! Guess it%26#39;s up to the Pharmacy for me then - the things us kids do for our dads ;)

RE: %26#39;other%26#39; stuff - usually it is sweepings from the cigar factory floor - couldn%26#39;t be any worse than the nicotine in the tobacco, eh.

Here%26#39;s another cigar company that stocks Dutch Masters - Finck Cigar Co:

    www.finckcigarcompany.com

On their website type in Dutch Masters on the product search function. They offer three styles. They are a mail order firm.

Hope this will help you in your search efforts.

Don%26#39;t they sell them at Hudson News newsstands/kiosks?

There are Hudson News newsstands (at least one in each) in Penn Station and Grand Central Station, and both airports.

  • JFK Long Term Parking in April 2006

We are traveling out of JFK in April on a 5ish flight to Paris(Air France). We return about a week later and are supposed to land at about 3ish. Our drive to JFK is about 3 hours from our home in Massachusetts. I am looking for advice from someone who has used the long term parking. If it is a total hassle,we are also considering staying at an airport hotel the night we return if they would allow park/fly option on the return instead of departure night. Advice???

JFK Long Term Parking in April 2006

I guess I%26#39;m wondering why you aren%26#39;t flying out of Logan.

    Wouldn%26#39;t that be closer?

JFK Long Term Parking in April 2006

I don%26#39;t know what you mean by it being a hassle. My understanding is you use the AirTrain to get to/from the lot. Here%26#39;s more info

    citidex.com/special/鈥fk_parking.html

I think as long as you leave yourself plenty of time to find a spot and get transported, you should be fine. There are also some private long term lots that provides a bus shuttle to the airport that some people prefer. Avistar is one I know (avistar.com)

If you needed a hotel room b/c of a very early flight, I%26#39;d say yes, use one of the airport hotel/motels. But I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll save any money by doing it that way. There%26#39;s a website airportparkingreservations.com that will show price options if you%26#39;re curious.

Sorry, use this website for Avistar

    longtermparking.com/COUPONS/cpavistarjfk.htm

Broadwaynyc, my guess is there was a better airfare from JFK or better non stop flight. ;)

    yeah, I know ;)

but sometimes by the time you factor in the gas ($3+/gallon) and the time, it sometimes isn%26#39;t that much of a saving

my sister lives in Maine, and there%26#39;s a shuttle that takes people right to Logan; your car is safe at home in the garage :)

I tried to get a flight out of Logan, although the drive is about equal from Western Mass. A lot more $$$ and guess why??? They just shuttle you from Boston to the flight that goes out of JFK!!! So I am OK with driving to JFK. Thanks for the advice--I appreciate it!

Just curious, how much is the flight from JFK?

I looked on Expedia and the non-stop flights from Boston to Paris are coming up $819 leaving 4/1/2006 and returning 4/8/2006 picking arbitrary dates.

I booked on 7/23/05 and got 633.97 inc taxes. Both non-stop flights. I wouldn%26#39;t be surprised if the airlines tack on a fuel surcharge by the time we fly in April 2006. BTW I checked all the travel sites and got the best deal by going directly to the Delta website. We are actually on Air France-Delta partner. Good luck

I used long term parking in July. No hassle at all. Just park you car in the long term lot and walk to the air tran. It was so easy. The airtran takes you right to your terminal.

Thanks to all--we will probably use long term parking. Trying to pack light with a carry on to make shlepping to and from JFK and CDG easier.

If you have AAA they have a discount when you show your card. I believe it%26#39;s 10%.

    Anyone used the above website?

They have the Newton showing as available for 29 Dec to Jan 4 for 822 USD (twin room).

No other sites have availability for the hotel.

Keen on booking this but unsure about the site.....

    Are they reliable!

    Hotelclub.net - Newton Hotel

Don%26#39;t know if site is reliable but for this time period it is good price.

    Hotelclub.net - Newton Hotel

Yes, two years ago I used them to book a hotel in Paris at a great rate. They were reliable and easy to deal with, especially important since we changed from one room to two and back again during the process. I don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s still the same people, but if they%26#39;re still in business I guess that%26#39;s a good sign.

totally trustworthy, it is a big booking company

...and they evidently buy up rooms so do have availability when the hotel itself doesn%26#39;t. I wouldn%26#39;t be concerned but you could call the hotel and double check.

I only have 2 nights in NY coming up this Friday and Saturday night (we leave on Sunday at 5pm) I would love love love to hear recommendations as to how I can spend my time most effectively. e.g. museums, modern art, history, ethnic culture, bars, dancing, music, sports, architecture, musicals, comedy, plays, etc.

My other suggestion would be to avoid chain restaurants.

Search ';chain restaurants'; in this forum for back-up.

To purchase tickets online at a discount (to Broadway shows), sign up for a free membership with Playbill at www.playbill.com. That way you can get your tickets ahead of time and not have to wait at the TKTS booth or overpay through a concierge. The only catch is that the online discounts are not for the brand new shows. They also have good reviews of shows at Playbill, and tell you where and how to buy tickets for all Boradway and Off Broadway shows.

Another great site to find restaurants that offer pre-theater specials is www.citysearch.com. We found an awesome French restaurant on 51st and 8th Avenue called Tout va bien, where we had a great three course meal for $22. You do have to go before 7pm to get that price. Also at Citysearch we found a garage in Times Square that charged half the price of the garage in our hotel.

    Hope this info helps you.

This is a very good post about staying in New Jersey:

  • Tours of New York City

My Sister and I are taking my 76 year old mother to New York next month for 4 days. My mother has never been and is interested to seeing all the sights with a tour guide. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Should we get a private tour ?

    Tours of New York City

You can%26#39;t go wrong on the Grayline double decker buses where you sit on the open top. We buy the 48 hr ticket and get on and off and always enjoy the tour guides. Riding more than 1 bus gives you more views as different guides give you more views of the city.

We also took the 3 hr harbor cruise around the island and really enjoyed that.

Also took the night bus tour that went over to Brooklyn so that we got a view of the lights of Manhattan.

    Thanksgiving Weekend hotel help

    Hi -

We%26#39;re coming up to the city for a one night stay (have tickets to the early Christmas show at Radio City, and really are looking for a place to stay overnight so we don%26#39;t have to get up at 3:00 a.m. to drive up - we%26#39;re from Philadelphia). Any suggestions for a reasonably priced hotel in the Rock Center area for a family of four (I tried Radio City Apts. but they%26#39;re all booked)... thanks for your help!

You%26#39;ll find budget hotels fully booked for Thanksgiving weekend way in advance.

Try locations out of midtown, you might have better luck. If you%26#39;re driving, take a look at the Travel Inn, which offers free parking.

Just start making calls. Last year my sister%26#39;s family decided only about 1.5 weeks before to go to NYC for the Macy%26#39;s Parade. She called up the Belvedere at my recommendation and was able to get a room for 3 nights. I thought for sure that they would have been booked for months, but they had no problem getting a room. So start calling around, maybe some hotel has just one room for just one night that will work perfectly for you.
