What to do in January

Hi, 4 of us going to NY for 7 nights in mid January including 2 girls 15 %26amp; 13 staying at the Novotel on Times Square. What are the must do, must see and must eat places to take them to, to blow their minds and make this a trip they won%26#39;t forget. Restaurants and places in films, music places, are there any concerts on, films being shot etc.

We are also thinking of going to Niagara mid-week. Do we do it in one day or stay overnight? Where do we stay, US or Canada? what is there to do, best place to stay, places to eat.

Sorry for the long list of questions as you can tell this is my first post. ANy ideas/suggestions gratefully received. Thanks, Shaun.

What to do in January

Personally, I%26#39;d go for Niagara in milder weather. January is the coldest month, and I would think it could be pretty brutal upstate.

The cold doesn%26#39;t stop New Yorkers though. And since lots of the holiday crowds are gone, it%26#39;s easier to get good theater tickets and restaurant reservations, and of course it%26#39;s easier to see the tourist attractions, museums, etc.

I don%26#39;t know how far in advance some of the Broadway shows sell tickets, but you can get that info on www.playbill.com. Before you buy tickets, check www.broadwaybox.com to see if there are any applicable discounts. You%26#39;ll have to wait for a bit, since the discounts aren%26#39;t offered that far in advance. But you might consider paying full price for something special like ';The Lion King.';

Use the search function to find Maidstone Nic%26#39;s amazing trip report from his February trip. You%26#39;ll get lots of ideas for things to do in winter.

What to do in January

I agree about forgetting Niagara Falls on this trip. It%26#39;s FAR from NYC (the best way to get there is to fly to Buffalo NY on jetblue.com and drive from there). It won%26#39;t be fun in the freezing cold.

If the girls followed S*x and the City tv show, there%26#39;s a special tour that visits some of those sites they might like. Teens also seem to like Madame Tussauds wax museum although adults find it disappointing and very pricey ;) Maybe let the girls go alone.

Good places to eat in the Times Square area are Virgils for bbq and ribs, John%26#39;s pizzeria on west 44 st for great thin crust pizza, Trattoria Trecolori for good, inexpensive Italian, Ruby Foos for Asian.

nycvisit.com has a calendar of events you can check for your specific dates.

Here%26#39;s a good visitor%26#39;s guide from NY Magazine
