The area is safe and fairly central. You%26#39;re in a business district, surrounded by office buildings, so it%26#39;ll be quiet at night and on weekends. Just a couple of blocks east, though, it becomes residential, and you%26#39;ll find restaurants and a more neighborhoody feel there, along 2nd and 1st Avenues.

You%26#39;re also just a few short blocks to Grand Central Station, which is a ';must-see.'; You can walk through Grand Central, and then out on 42nd Street. Walk west on 42nd Street and you%26#39;ll come to 5th Ave. and the main public library, with pretty Bryant Park behind it. A couple of blocks more and you%26#39;re in Times Square.

Or take a bus down 5th Avenue to 34th Street, and you%26#39;re right at the Empire State Building. Or just walk it. (I hope you%26#39;re packing comfortable shoes!)

Your main public transport is the Lexington Avenue (';green line';). The local station is at 51st St. and Lexington Avenue. You%26#39;re also near the E train that stops at 53rd St. and Lexington. Actually, both stations are connected underground. And you can easily get to Times Square by bus. There are crosstown buses that run along 49th St. (westbound toward Times Square), and 50th St. (eastbound). So if you%26#39;re coming home from a Broadway show, just get the bus on 50th St. and 7th Avenue, and it%26#39;ll zip you back home easily.

There are lovely holiday gift markets around the city -- in the main waiting room at Grand Central Station, in Bryant Park, in Union Square, and a smaller one at the Columbus Circle entrance to Central Park.
