Where to stay outside NYC ?

We are planning a trip to the East Coast next summer. We hope to visit NYC for a couple of days. We would prefer not to drive in the city. Is there a nearby town (where it is easier to drive) that you would recommend we get a hotel (name of hotel?) from which we could easily catch a train or a bus to the city. What would be your suggestion?

Thanks for your help!

Where to stay outside NYC ?

Whilst browsing another site I noticed that there is long term parking at the airports (this one mentioned Newark) maybe that could be an option - leave your car at an airport parking lot and use the public transport to get you into NYC and then stay actually in NYC - I don%26#39;t know the cost of this so could be way off base with this one......

I would think one of the NY towns on the green (Hudson) or blue (Harlem) line would be good.

Obviously, you have to balance out a long train commute with your distaste of driving in NY City. Just fyi, the train ride from midtown Manhattan to Yonkers is about 30 minutes; to Hastings-on-Hudson is about 40 minutes; to Tarrytown is about 50 minutes. Also, the trains stop running at around 12 midnight or 1 am.

Alternatively, you can commute from the NJ side. Here is their train website http://www.njtransit.com and the cities they serve.

NJ Transit trains also stop running at roughly midnight. I think better would be to stay in Newark or Hoboken because the Path trains run 24 hours. http://www.nj.com/njtransit/path.html (though this might not matter to you if you do not plan to stay out late. Also, driving in Newark and Hoboken is not significantly different from NYC.)

some of the hotels charge a parking fee; some don%26#39;t

I%26#39;ve compiled some information for the northern NJ side
