Please can anyone help, planning our trip for August next year. On our return from Las Vegas and Arizona we can fly back to the UK from NY Chicargo or Boston

We are a family with an 8 yr old who wants to see Statue of Liberty. I am not bothered about shopping and looking for a suggestions for a 2 night only stop over

How far from Newark and cost

Hotel location to suit a family at least 4 star

What can we do with only 1 day sight seeing

I am frightened of undergrounds, can we get about without using them. I know London is difficult and I avoid totally

NY is our first choice but is it the right choice?

Good Morning- I just kind of stumbled across this but I think I can help!

NY is definately the best choice. I work there and have stayed in the city many times when I have late evenings. I have not taken a taxi from Newark in some time, but it should be around $50 US. Price of gas lately may change that. I prefer Newark to the other NY airports...it is much easier to manuever around.

For a hotel that is nice, affordable and in a good central location, I would choose the Warwick. The rooms are very spacious for a NY hotel. Some of the others are hipper, but the room is the size of the bed (very small). It is on 6th Ave (aka Avenue of the americas), is close to Central Park, great restaurants and is easy to get taxis, etc. Get a room with 2 beds and you will be very happy. Search google for good rates...

There are sooo many things to do for 1 day! The Statue of Liberty is an awesome sight...depends how ';up close and personal'; your daughter wants to get. I have never actually been there with her but have seen her from a boat many times or from the part of Manhatten known as Battery Park City. If you just want to see her from BPC and go, you will squeeze much more into your day. If you go out there and then to Ellis Island (which is interesting to Americans as this is where all the ancestors first came thru when they left their native lands) it will take most of your day. There is a lot of history there. It may not be as interesting for someone not looking for their heritage. You may want to take a boat called the ';cirle line'; which goes around the island. I have never taken this myself, but it is worth looking into. Right next to where it docks is the ';Intrepid';. THis is floating aircraft carrier museum. Again, I have not been myself, but it is really something to look at from the street and I always tell myself I will get there someday!

There are great museums in NY and the kids usually like the Natural HIstory musuem which I believe has a great dinosaur exhibit on now.

It is very easy to get around NY without using the subway. Taxis are not cheap if you get stuck in traffic. Our subways

are fairly easy to get around but I understand that you are not comfortable. No need to worry, you will be able to get around.

Really looking forward to our 3 week trip Las Vegas for 3 days then on to a ranch for the night near Grand Canyon and a villa in the Phoenix area for 2 weeks plus now New York is looking like our base from the UK to start our holiday.

Glad to hear I can avoid your subway and still get about. I have hated trains for years and busy confined spaces.

Just have a moment for now, but wanted to mention that a nice way to see Lady Liberty from the water is to take the (free) Staten Island Ferry; It would probably be fun for your 8yr old.

Also, look into the open top bus tours -- they have many different routes to choose from %26amp; are a relaxing way to see the city.

You%26#39;ve gotten very good info so far. If your child wants to see the Statue of Liberty, NY is the ONLY choice ;)

One option for a hotel is staying downtonw at the Ritz Carlton Battery Park. It%26#39;s not as central as staying midtown, but it%26#39;s very close to the Statue and you could even get a room with a view of the Statue. This location would put you not only near the ferries (either the Staten Island which is fast and free or the statue%26#39;s own ferry where you can visit Liberty Island where the Statue is located along with the Ellis Island immigration museum) but also near the South Street Seaport, City Hall, Wall St. and other downtown sites. In August, using the NY Water Taxi would be a great way to get around and see the city. Their website is

I think the NY Party Shuttle is also a great idea to see a lot of the city in a short time. It%26#39;s a 6 hr. tour starting at noon.

To get from Newark airport, you could either take public transport (what is best depends on where you%26#39;re staying) OR order a car service for a flat fare. Here%26#39;s a website with options and links

The Embassy Suites is another downtown hotel option popular with families. It%26#39;s an all suite hotel.

If you want to stay midtown, the Doubletree Suites in Times Square is another popular family hotel.
