Brooklyn bridge walk - how far is it and Ok for winter?

So many good reviews for the walk but we%26#39;ve no idea if it%26#39;s feasible in the cold weather and how long is the walk.

Could you also tell us which end is better to go from as we only want to walk one way and maybe public transport back. We%26#39;re thinking of going to Brooklyn by subway in the morning then walk the bridge back to Manhattan in the afternoon.

I don%26#39;t think my kids would be keen walking more than 3-4kms in even best weather.

Yes, it is best to go to Brooklyn by subway and walk back across the bridge to Manhattan. FANTASTIC views of the skyline. The main span is 1,595.5 feet (about 530 meters) long. It has a decent grade - it may feel like a bit of a climb. If you or your kids are asthmatic in cold weather, you might get a little winded. Take your time.

Here is an incredibly thorough history and description of the Brooklyn Bridge.

I don%26#39;t know if you realized this, but your question was worded kinda funny (';how long is the walk?....my kids wouldn%26#39;t be keen walking more than 3-4 kms....';) OK, you really didn%26#39;t mean to imply that you thought the bridge span was a couple of kms long, right? ;o) (Those must be darn big bridges they got down there in Australia!!)

I%26#39;m assuming you meant that you were going to walk around Brooklyn for a while. Is that right?

i too have a question re; this topic! How long will it take to walk it from the way that has been suggested. Want to know how much time our our day to allow for this! thanks!

I want to apolgize for my previous post. The MAIN span is 533 meters, but the entire bridge is about 2 km long (6,000 feet). Duh, I feel like a doofus.

What with stopping for viewing, reading the plaques, pictures and contemplation - give yourself about an hour to cross the bridge.

No question that it%26#39;s best to walk from Brooklyn to Manhattan. I think that your best bet is to take the subway to Clark Street. When you leave the station, turn right down Clark Street, past Hicks Street and then left into Willow Street where you will stroll past some beautifully preserved Brownstones (complete with stoops) as well as a lovely converted firehouse. At the end of the road turn right down Pierrepont and then onto the Promenade for the perfect view of Lower Manhattan. Once you%26#39;ve taken all your photos, walk back up Montague St stopping off at the Heights Cafe for refreshments then make your way via Clinton Street to Cadman Plaza and then onwards to Adams Street and the Brooklyn Bridge.

If you break up the walk this way it%26#39;s very manageable and I%26#39;m sure none of your party will be complaining! The first view of what turns out to be the Manhattan Bridge in the distance spurs everyone on! If the weather is fine and your timing right you may be lucky to see the city engulfed by the gorgeous golden glow of sunset.

Nic, your route sounds great. How long would you say we should set aside for it (no kids)?

Pinkster, I%26#39;ve just checked the photos I took as they give the times I took them! We arrived at Clark St. Station at 3:20pm, reached the Promenade at 3:34pm, coffee at Heights Cafe 4pm, start of bridge 4:58pm, Manhattan 5:30pm.

MaidestoneNic, I would like to congratulate you on a superb website of your New York experience.

I will also be visiting for the 1st time in February, your photos have given me a real pre visit feel for the city.

I have added your website to my favs for further use in detailed planning closer to February.

Thank you .

Thanks, Swansejack! It was a labour of love and we were just so lucky with the weather and the wonderful people that we met. For our son (also Jack) to say it was the best week of his life, says it all! Still, it%26#39;s nice to be appreciated.

I was just wondering about the question visi8 asked about walking the bridge in winter. If it is very cold/raining/very windy etc is it still nice to walk?

GG, I don%26#39;t think anywhere is very nice if it%26#39;s raining or very windy but, if you%26#39;re dressed sensibly for cold weather, the bridge is fine. Don%26#39;t be fooled by how it feels just outside your hotel however, the wind can whip down the East River!
