Staying on the UPW at the Milburn (the good reviews on TripAdvisors convinced me, hopefully it%26#39;s ok...) in December.
Have stayed around the W 64th area before, but never went out for dining or drinks in the area.
Anyone has some nice tips, aside from Zabar and Tavern on the Green. Supposedly there is a good Greek around there?
Would be nice to have some drinks at a cool bar as well.
thanks for your advice!
Tips for bars/restaurants on the Upper West Side?Tavern on the Green gets pretty bad reviews for food and service. Better to just stop in for a drink and eat elsewhere.
For things like bars and restaurants, it would help if you%26#39;d tell us how many people in your party, your ages, your budget, and what kind of scene you like (trendy, romantic, etc.).
One restaurant I like in that area is Kitchen 82, on Columbus and 82nd Street, not far from your hotel. It serves a fixed-price menu for $25, which includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert (with a choice of 5 or 6 of each). Tip, tax, and beverages not included. Here%26#39;s a link to their website: http://www.kitchen82.com/kitchen_82/home.html
Tips for bars/restaurants on the Upper West Side?We had a great meal at a restaurant called Citrus, on 320 Amsterdam Ave and 75th St. Check it out, it had a great menu, great sushi, and great drinks! Really cool restaurant and bar area, and very friendly staff. Here is a link you could look at - www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>
Enjoy!
@ Alex : just the 2 of us. Not really on a budget, so let%26#39;s say lunch for $60 seems reasonable. Dinner around$100. Looking for something romantic, as I%26#39;m due to propose....;)
Trying to avoid the tourist-trap chain restaurants anyway...
One tip from a poster was to stick to one main meal a day, so either fancy lunch or fancy dinner.
@ Tina. Thx,will check it out.
Bettina recently posted a good list of UWS restaurants.

Citrus has a good bar, and I also like the West Side Brewing Company, which is more of a neighborhood kind of place. The bar at the Mandarin Oriental is supposed to be really nice, but I haven%26#39;t been there. I might try it when I%26#39;m in NYC next month.
I agree with Alex on Kitchen 82. It%26#39;s owned by famous chef/restauranteur Charlie Palmer and they do a prix fixe dinner for something like $25. Problem is long lines. Ouest is another good new American but much pricier. %26#39;Cesca is a sister rest. for Italian supposed to be very good on 75th.
Nice Matin is very nice French off the lobby of the Lucerne hotel. (79 st)
I really like Pasha on 71 st for something a bit different (Turkish). Pomodoro Rosso on Columbus %26amp; 71st is supposed to be good, inexpensive Italian (I haven%26#39;t tried it).
Cafe Luxembourg on 70th b/w Amsterdam %26amp; West End is a fun place that gets ';buzzy'; later.
You should definitely have drinks at the bar at the Mandarin Oriental or better still, splurge for a meal at Asiate, their Asian rest. with great views from the 35 floor of the Time Warner building.
I agree on the big lunch OR dinner idea, but what about breakfast? Some of the best places for b/f are in your lap. Sarabeth%26#39;s, Popover Cafe, Zabar%26#39;s, Fairway, Barney Greengrass....
Isabella%26#39;s is sort of the classic UWS place good for brunch, lunch or dinner.
You already have a number of good recommendations. Anather very pleasant night out, or a lunch, is Cafe des Artistes. It is right across the street from Tavern on the Green but with much better food and a great decor (see web site listed below). If you decide to go, get a reservation right away since it books up fast especially around the Christmas holidays.

If you are interested in jazz, a short taxi or subway ride from your hotel is Cleopatra%26#39;s Needle on Broadway and 92 Street. They have jazz groups every evening with no cover charge and a small minimum. The food is only average, so go there for drinks after you eat. See link:

Thanks folks, plenty of bars/restaurants to try during our 5 day visit. The breakfast tip is a good idea, however we%26#39;re not the world%26#39;s biggest eaters in the morning. Usually toast and Starbucks is enough. But will definitely try some of the fix prices at lunch.
Again, thanks for your quick responses. Will let you know what we thought of it.
A great dinner place is Ouest (www.ouestny.com) - modern american cooking - When booking as for one of the red leather booths - You can book on opentable.com so no need to make an overseas phone call. I dined there with my partner (we are late twenties/early thirties %26amp; love to eat out) The bar is small but has a cool neighbourhood feel.

If you were a fan of the film You%26#39;ve got mail try Cafe Lalo (www.cafelalo.com)
Just returned from staying in Upper West there are loads of restaurants to suit every price range. Have a walk along Columbus and Amsterdam Ave%26#39;s and you can compare. Our favourite was Ocean Grill quite an upmarket fish restaurant were you can get dressed up if you want, a lot of people were wearing jackets or you can go in smart casual. The staff are very efficient a main course will set you back around $25 the cheapest bottle of wine was $34. You can go the full hog and have lobster. I wouldn%26#39;t go if you are not keen on fish as the meat selection is limited. Have a great time.
