Just realized I originally posted this in the wrong forum (New York, not NY, NY. Oops)
I%26#39;m on the final countdown for my trip to NYC (5 sleeps!), and one of the last things I want to do is to create a New York playlist on my iPod. I%26#39;m looking for inspiration.
Some titles thus far: ';New York City'; by They Might Be Giants and Cub, ';New York New York'; (of course) by Sinatra, plus I have a Mel Torme CD called ';Songs of New York';. Lots there.
What am I missing?
I%26#39;m not looking for songs that necessarily are about New York, but perhaps music that evokes a feeling about the city. For you non-natives, is there a song that reminds you of a memorable trip?
Any suggestions are appreciated. My tastes are somewhat eclectic (although, I must confess, I never got the New York Dolls) so anything goes!
Many thanks.

The Boxer:
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station, runnin鈥?scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters, where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Asking only workman鈥檚 wages, I come lookin鈥?for a job, but I get no offers
Just a comeon from the whores on 7th avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there
Now the years are rolling by me, they are rockin鈥?even me
I am older than I once was, and younger than I鈥檒l be, that鈥檚 not unusual
No it isn鈥檛 strange, after changes upon changes, we are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same

And I鈥檓 laying out my winter clothes, wishing I was gone, goin鈥?home
Where the new york city winters aren鈥檛 bleedin鈥?me, leadin鈥?me to go home
In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him
鈥檛il he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains
Yes he still remains

Woops, I meant Sheena is a Punk Rocker! Yikes.
Here are a few more suggestions:
';One'; from A Chorus Line
';I%26#39;m Hip'; by Bette Midler
';I guess the lord must be in New York city'; from You%26#39;ve Got Mail
42nd street..';come and meet, those dancing feet, on the avenue i%26#39;m taking you to, 42nd street';
If you%26#39;re going to have ';I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City'; which was Harry Nillsson%26#39;s, hoped for, theme song for Midnight Cowboy, then you ought to have the song that pipped him to the post, Fred Neal%26#39;s ';Everybody%26#39;s Talking';.
Also, don%26#39;t forget Feeling Groovy (The 59th Street Bridge Song) + Only living Boy in New York - Simon and Garfunkel, An Englishman in New York - Sting, Talkin%26#39; New York %26amp; Hard Times in New York Town - Bob Dylan, Fairytale of New York - The Pogues %26amp; Kirsty MacColl, New York Minute - Don Henley, New York City Serenade - Bruce Springsteen (plus anything from The Rising), Riding Out the Storm - Rodney Crowell, Woke Up This Morning (Theme from the Sopranos) - Alabama 3, Raining Down on Bleecker Street - Devonsquare, King of the New York Streets - Dion DiMucci, Miss Liberty - Heather Eatman, From the Brooklyn Bridge - Mark Germino, Red Cab to Manhattan + Little Italy - Stephen Bishop, Chelsea Morning - Joni Mitchell, Coney Island + NYC - David Munyon, West Side Story and probably loads more which I will remember as soon as I press ';Continue';
Nic...was just listening to Joni singing Chelsea Morning earlier today!
