You won%26#39;t need a car and in fact you would be better without one unless you plan to go out of the city. Car parking is very expensive and traffic is terrible. The public transportation is very good and if is easy to get around.
Have a look at the visiotrs bureau website and plan where you want to go.

Re how safe is it -It is like any other city but you will see plenty police going around. Just be sensible and you will be fine.
Central park should look very good at that time.

Middle of October is one of the best weather times for NYC. Look at other visitors%26#39; trip reports on this site for things to do. Do not rent a car! NYC has a great subway/bus system that runs 24/7 or if you want taxis. NYC is the safest large city in the US.
Don鈥檛 rent a car. It would take you longer to park it (if you can even find a spot) then it would take you to walk most places. It would be less expensive to take cabs everywhere. Our subway system is extremely safe and it runs all night long. New York is a much safer city then Dallas, Houston or San Antonio 鈥?so there is a very good chance is safer then your hometown.
