Can anyone reccomend a good map of the subway? in planning my detailed itinerary and subway/walking plans, i can%26#39;t find a good map that shows stations by name and what lines pass through there while clearly showing street names so i know where the station is.

Unsafe places in Manhattan

Can anyone tell me what areas of Manhattan are unsafe and best avoided by 2 female tourist, we don%26#39;t want to walk down a street and wind up in the wrong kind of place, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Manhattan is safe. But of course caution is the name of the game. I think it is important to have a plan as to where you are going- not just wandering. After dark I myself, a male was not really scard but stuck pretty close to my hotel and the general nieghborhood. Shouldn%26#39;t be a problem going to a show and staying on the major streets. DOn%26#39;t bring on any un-necessary attention to yourself and you will be fine. Enjoy !!!

Unsafe places in Manhattan

Where are you staying? Really, there are not any unsafe places that I know of in Manhattan, certainly not any below about 96th St. ANd you MUST go out at night! Do what NYorkers do...if you look down a street or start walking and feel unsafe, turn around and change plans. Neighborhoods where you will feel extremely safe, day or night: The Village (East, WEst, Greenwich), the Lower East Side, Chelsea, Little Italy, Chinatown, midtown between 9th Ave and 2nd Ave (that%26#39;s like ALL of midtown), Upper East Side, Upper West Side, SoHo, TriBeCa, Battery Park City. I feel comfortable riding the subway until midnight.

By the way, my husband is from the Gold Coast; just got back from a trip home. Brisbane has some GREAT restaurants! NYork is just a bigger Brisbane (: have fun!

During the daytime you should feel safe. At night it is important to stay on the main streets where other people are walking. Occasionally, I have felt uncomfortable if I am walking on a deserted block (including midtown) with stores that are shuttered and only one or two persons on them. Just switch to a busier street.

Restaurant recommendation: Lattanzi on Restaurant Row is really something special.

If you want excellent, trendy nouvelle Italian (it%26#39;s really good) I suggest Caffe Rosso in the West Village on W 12th St, plus it%26#39;s a fun neighborhood to walk around in the evening. I am sure other folks on tripadvisor have places to recommend.

No, Restaurant Row is W. 46th St. - in midtown near Times Square and the Broadway theater district.

You will struggle to find an unsafe area in Manhattan. It%26#39;s too expensive these days for anybody but the rich to live in. Except for some areas in the northern tip and a couple of housing projects on the lower east side, you will be hard pressed to experience danger. Probably as safe or safer than Sydney.

Stage Deli vs. Carnegie, Katz

Something I%26#39;ve been meaning to ask. I%26#39;ve been to NY a handful a times and somehow more often than not I end up at Stage Deli. I think its because of the location, it sort of pops up whereever I%26#39;ve been walking around. Anyway, just curious, how would the locals rate it, compared to the others ? Thanks.

I like Katz on the lower east side. Never had a better sandwich anywhere.

Hey Larry - in pure volume, Carnegie wins hands down. A sandwich that will make you say wow-huge. And they do cure their own corned beef and have some tasty lean pastrami...I%26#39;m drooling. I%26#39;ve been to both, Carnegie is more earthy, lots of tourists plus a good sprinkling of regulars.

Stage a bit more staid, always putting out a good product, If I had my druthers, I%26#39;d choose Carnegie, if I can get in and not have to buck the crowds.

The suggestion to try %26#39;em all - good call.

Ednoo HOW can carnegie be greater volume, Stage%26#39;s sandwiches are HUGE. This I gotta see ! Is it Carnegie that%26#39;s famous for the surly waiters ? Ordinarily I would not dig that one bit but, I figure once I%26#39;m in NYC I%26#39;ll change from my normal curmudgeonly self %26amp; find it amusing... Yup, they have a location in Austin. I had a pretty good sandwich in Vegas at the new Wynn casino in the sportsbook called Zoozacrackers.

Fifth generation kosher butcher Marc Katz, brought his family recipes from New York City and says his deli in Austin serves the best sandwich west of the Hudson River.

Help! Another first timer

My family (husband and I (both 43), 17 yr old son and 15 yr old daughter) will be arriving at LGA on Sept 25 for 5 nights. We want to see and do everything. We get in around 6 pm on Sun and don%26#39;t plan to do much but check in to our hotel, the Salisbury and get something to eat.

Monday morn we thought we would hit it by taking the double decker bus (48 hour pass?) and seeing as much as we can. Tuesday is wide open.

We have plans to go to the Today show early Wednesday as my daughter turns 15 that day and we hope she can get on TV. We have reservations for a 10am NBC studio tour and later we have tickets for the 2pm Spamalot. We would like to go to Serendipity later that day for frozen hot chocolate to celebrate and the evening is open.

We definitely want to see SOL and Ellis Island, ESB, Times Square, walk the Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, Ground Zero, St. Paul%26#39;s and Central Park. I don%26#39;t know which things are close together and how to schedule my days.

We are on somewhat of a budget ( but what the hell, we%26#39;ll be in New York!) and fairly adventurous (we lived in Japan and used the trains in Tokyo frequently). We aren%26#39;t that in to museums and I don%26#39;t want to spend too much time shopping. We would like to have pizza at Grimaldis and a sandwhich at Carnegie Deli but other than that have no restaurant plans.

We are taking a train out of Grand Central Station around noon on Friday to New Haven, CT. There we are renting a car and driving to Newport, RI for a couple of days and then to Portsmouth, NH for another couple of days before flying back to San Diego. I am guessing the weather should still be mild and the fall foilage should be beautiful?

Any help with our schedule would be greatly appreciated.

(early colonialism, Revolutionary war, Teddy Roosevelt, immigration/Ellis Island, Harlem Renaissance, early feminism, Franklin Roosevelt, Wall Street, military, avant garde art and poetry, hippies and Beatniks, punk rock, etc, etc?)

We will go to Ellis Island, Wall Street etc. My husband just retired from the US Navy so we don%26#39;t need to see another aircraft carrier - he was stationed on many of them over the years! We all love rock and roll - everything from Ozzie to Green Day! Anything that we should check into that will allow our teenagers also?

looks like it may rain toward the end of the week. What are some ideas of what to do in the rain?

Shall I pack an umbrella or is this an easy thing to find. I don%26#39;t remember them in the times square area but I%26#39;m sure there are some there.

There are many indoor things to do in the rain, e.g. museums, shopping. Take one of those small fold-up umbrella for each person in you group. If you don%26#39;t have them, most souvenir shops have them and once it starts to rain, guys come out of nowhere and sell them on the street.

I think we will get tickets to the Producers. With the discount code I found we could get the tickets for 66.25 + a lot of service charges totaling 147 for both. Can we get them for less if we wait to go to the booth on the show day? We are going on Tuesday so I don%26#39;t think they will sell out.

Ok...next question....if I buy online, do you all have a preference for orchestra level or mezzaine level? For ex. I can get Row h right orch. 11 or 13 seats from aisle. Or I found Row s center orch. or pretty close in on the mezzanine level in the center. CLOSEST IN or further back with a more center seat?

Since I usually see a show alone, I get pretty good seat locations.

I like to be near the aisle, about 5-8 rows back in orchestra.

So seats 2,4 or 1,3 or 100-1xx are my favorites.

Hardly ever sit in mezzanine but if I do, closer to the front and center the better.
