We have a really good range of Asian (Chinese/Thai/Malaysian) and Indian restaurants in New Zealand - can anyone recommend some good (and cheap!) restaurants in NY that aren%26#39;t Asian or European?

Some moderately priced restaurants in my neighborhood that fit your criteria:
Sipan 702 Amsterdam 94 Street 212-665-9929-Peruvian-very good food, nice atmosphere, quite during the week, a little noisier on weekends.
Pampa 768 Amsterdam 97/98 Streets 212-865-2929 good grilled Argentinean steak. Crowded. No credit cards.
These are all cheap cheap...
Cuban: Cafe con Leche 424 Amsterdam Ave (at 80th St)
Mexican: The Great Burrito 405 Amsterdam Ave (right across the street!)
Middle Eastern / Israeli (kosher): http://hoomoos.com (Soho)
For falafel (Middle Eastern or Israeli?), I%26#39;d go with Mamoun%26#39;s, Moustache or Olive Tree, all in the Village.
I%26#39;d also try Turkish food. (Bereket on Houston St.) I know Dervish is supposed to be great, but too expensive for me, never been. Order a tajine.

You can search by cuisine and neighborhood, and print out their menus.
For instance, here%26#39;s a list of Jamaican and Carribean food (has interesting similarities to Southeast Asian, sadly due to colonialism/slave trade.) Negril is a favorite.:

For something more American, try Soul Food or Southern cooking. I like Acme, Pink Tea Cup and Orchid.

Two good Brazilian restaurants are Via Brazil and Emporium Brasil, both on W. 46th between 5th and 6th. Not exactly cheap, but still fairly moderate.
Dervish is excellent, with a $20.00 prix fixed that is well worth it, and the regular prices are relatively inexpensive.
Uncle Nicks, on 9th Avenue in Hell%26#39;s Kitchen, is good.
For authentic Jewish Deli, try 2nd Avenue Deli in the East Village, or Ben%26#39;s in the Garment District.
Good, cheap polish food, Little Poland in the East Village, or Veselka, in the East Village, also.

Thanks for the info re Dervish, NYCgirl. I must%26#39;ve been thinking of some other place.
For good, reasonably priced Ethiopian food, try Queen of Sheba on 10th Avenue and 46th Street. Also on 10th Avenue, right around there, is a good, cheap Mexican restaurant called Tulcingo del Valle. Not much to look at, but clean and friendly.
You might also want to visit www.menupages.com, which sorts Manhattan (not other boroughs) restaurants by cuisine and other factors (e.g., neighborhood, price).
If you find Afghani food a bit unusual, try Khyber Pass...
my favorite there is an appetizer that%26#39;s little pumpkin turnovers - great with the minty herb sause that%26#39;s on every table...

Antique musical instruments, throw pillows and oriental rugs fill this small, cozy and inexpensive East Village Afghan restaurant. The air is filled with spices, and the exotic destination and dining experience is memorable. Try their Pamir Sabzu - a delicious salad of mint, watercress and feta cheese. Try entrees like Quorma Sabz (lamb and scallions saut茅ed with spinach and coriander), or chopped beef patties with basmati rice and lots of hot spices. Or sample the spicy saut茅 of spinach and lamb, homemade noodles topped with mildly spiced meat and lentils, or eggplant slices served over a layer of mint yogurt. Top your meal off with Turkish coffee and their outsatnding Baklava. Entrees range in price from $9.50-$13.95. The best Afghani food in the city. Very authentic, very novel, very tasty.';
Wow, thank you all for your recommendations. There is enough here to keep myself and my husband very full!
